Hi @Michael0807 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP laptop might have a network connection issue where it incorrectly displays that an Ethernet connection is active, even though you're not using one. Here’s how you can troubleshoot this issue:
Check Network Connections:
- Disconnect Ethernet Cable: Make sure the Ethernet cable is unplugged.
- Check Network Settings: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network and Sharing Center. Ensure that the Ethernet connection is not showing as "Connected."
Disable Ethernet Adapter:
- Open Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.
- Right-click on the Ethernet adapter and select Disable. This will stop the system from attempting to use it.
Check Network Adapters:
- Open Device Manager (you can search for it in the Start menu).
- Expand the Network adapters section and look for any Ethernet adapters.
- Right-click on the Ethernet adapter and select Uninstall device. Restart your laptop, and Windows should automatically reinstall the network adapter.
Update Network Drivers:
- In Device Manager, right-click on the Ethernet adapter and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the prompts.
Reset Network Settings:
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset.
- Click on Reset now to reset all network settings. Note that this will remove and reinstall all network adapters and set other networking components back to their original settings.
Check for System Updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for any available updates. Sometimes, system updates can resolve such issues.
Check for Malware:
- Run a full system scan with your antivirus software to rule out the possibility of malware causing network issues.
