At home I use my laptop connected to the USB-C dock (HP USB-C G5 Essential Dock) to benefit from less cabling on the desk as the dock provides power, mouse, LAN with internet access as well as a second screen.
Very often when browsing using Explorer the Laptop looses the the LAN connection. Sometime the connection is reestablished, sometime I have to choose the other USB-C port for reconnection or even reboot.
What is causing the issue?

Hi @Arion59,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Check the Connectivity:
- Ensure that the USB-C cable is securely connected to both the laptop and the docking station.
- Verify that the Ethernet cable is properly connected from the docking station to the router or wall jack.
Power Connection:
- Make sure the docking station is connected to AC power using the provided power cord. The docking station needs to be powered to function correctly with all connected devices.
Update Drivers:
- Confirm that you have the latest drivers installed for the docking station and the laptop. You can download and install the latest drivers from the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
Prevent Sleep or Hibernation:
- Open the Control Panel and select the Power Options page.
- Click Choose what closing the lid does.
- Select Do nothing under Plugged in, and then click Save changes.
Check Network Settings:
Windows 10:
- Right-click Start and then select Network Connections.
- Right-click Wi-Fi and then click Disable.
Reset the Port:
- If the USB port on the docking station is disabled due to non-compliant device power specifications, reset the port by:
- Disconnecting the device that disabled the port.
- Disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord from the docking station.
I hope this helps.

Hi Kuroi_Kenshi,
I checked all you your hints and I can confirm that the HP USB-C G5 Essential Dock as well the HP Envy x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-ac0000 are up to date in regard to Bios and OS Windows 11
For the HP USB-C G5 Essential Dock I found earlier this year HP update files as sp152517, sp153723 and sp155374 to update the dock.
For the HP Envy x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-ac0xxx I perfomed a Bios update before I posted my issue.
Bios Date 10/15/2024 Revion F.03
Windows 11, version 24H2 (KB5053598) + (KB5054979) + (KB5053656).
The network conntion is unstable via the dock. If I acctivate the the WLAN connection I experience more or less no connectivity interuptions.
NB: Is there a reason why this specific HP product is not HP Wolf protected ?

Hi @Arion59,
Thank you for the response:
Here's what you can try:
Update Docking Station Firmware and Drivers:
Firmware Update: Ensure your HP USB-C G5 Essential Dock is running the latest firmware. You can download the latest firmware from HP's official website.
Driver Update: Install the latest network drivers for the docking station. These can also be found on HP's support page. HP Community
Adjust Power Management Settings:
Navigate to Device Manager on your laptop.
Locate the Network Adapters section and find the Ethernet adapter associated with the docking station.
Right-click on the adapter, select Properties, and then go to the Power Management tab.
Uncheck the option that allows the computer to turn off this device to save power.
Use a High-Quality Ethernet Cable:
Ensure you're using a reliable Ethernet cable that meets at least CAT5e standards. A subpar cable can contribute to connectivity issues. HP Community
Test with an Alternate Docking Station:
If possible, try using a different docking station to determine if the issue lies with the HP USB-C G5 Essential Dock or the laptop itself.
Monitor for Overheating:
Some users have reported that docking stations can overheat, leading to intermittent disconnections. Ensure the dock is placed in a well-ventilated area to prevent overheating.
Check for BIOS Updates:
Visit HP's support page for your specific laptop model to see if there are any BIOS updates available, as these can sometimes resolve hardware compatibility issues.
Disable Wi-Fi When Using Ethernet:
Some systems may experience conflicts between Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections. Disable Wi-Fi to see if the Ethernet connection stabilizes. Plugable Support
I hope this helps.

Hi Kuroi_Kens
Yesterday I was roaming the HP support site and got accross HP PC Docks and Display Diagnostics Windos. After installing I let it run the diagnosis and let the tool update a series of firmware and drivers. As a consequence the Windows Update was able to install its lates major update package.
Today I performed some further testing, as a result it appears that the laptops connection is stable.
If I rerun the HP PC Docks and Display Diagnostics Windos I still recieve a message the the Dock lacks of the latest firmware update. Never the less I have installed all newest files available on https://support.hp.com/ch-de/drivers/usb-c-docking/model/2101469888?sku=72C71AA&serialnumber=5CG237Z...
Thank you for your help

Hi,
Let's try a few more steps:
Hard Reset the Dock:
Sometimes, firmware flags get stuck.
Unplug everything from the dock.
Unplug the dock’s power supply.
Hold the power button (if present) for 10–15 seconds.
Plug in power, then reconnect everything.
This forces the dock to reinitialize firmware-level behavior.
Manually Flash Firmware Again (even if it says installed):
Sometimes HP firmware needs two reboots to register.
Re-run the same firmware file (sp155374 was the latest I think), even if it says "already up to date."
Restart after each install.
Check USB-C Port Priority on Your Laptop:
You mentioned changing USB-C ports helps. So:
Stick to the port closest to the rear/hinge of the laptop (some ports on x360 share bandwidth with other devices internally).
Disable USB selective suspend via:
Control Panel → Power Options → Change Plan Settings → Advanced → USB Settings → USB selective suspend → Disable.
Set Ethernet Adapter to Full Duplex:
Go to Device Manager → Network Adapters.
Right-click the USB Ethernet Adapter, go to Properties.
Under Advanced tab, find Speed & Duplex → Set to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex.
I hope this helps.
