In the last 3 weeks my cursor has started jumping around all over the place - it even does it when not used. If I have a website open all of a sudden I'm on a different page. I have tried everything I can think of - new drivers, uninstalling apps and windows updates, upgrading virus checkers, turning on windows defender, trying other malware software, tried a bluetooth mouse (Microsoft surface Arc) and a usb mouse and no mouse - only the touch pad. While it is marginally better it's still a problem. The laptop is out of warranty I think - although I'm not sure how long the warranty is. At times it's just about unusable.... Does anyone have any idea's? Thanks

Hi @megang351,
Thank you for posting on HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for the First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
As I understand you are having an issue with the mouse cursor jumps all over the screen. Don't worry I'll try my best to help you with this,
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
· Does this happen only with the browser such as Internet Explorer, Chrome (if yes, which browser are you using)?
· Have you made any recent updates to your computer, software or hardware related?
· When was the last time it worked fine (date)?
Check the Mouse options under control panel:
Start → Control Panel → Mouse → Buttons tab. Check the box labeled "Use MS Office compatible scroll only." Also, check the box below labeled "Scroll in active window only."
Attempt using an alternate/external mouse.
Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your mouse:
Go to the Device Manager and select your mouse. Uninstall it and then restart your computer. During restart, your mouse driver will automatically be reinstalled.
· 1. Click on Start and type ‘Device Manager’.
· 2. Click Device Manager.
· 3. Click + sign next to Mouse.
· 4. Right-click on mouse entry and choose "uninstall".
· 5. Restart your computer.
Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi, Thanks for your reply - I can find the following "Check the box labeled "Use MS Office compatible scroll only." Also, check the box below labeled "Scroll in active window only." Those options don't appear when I go to the mouse button options.
Last time it worked properly was around the 13th May (I think) could have been 18th May. Will try the uninstall and reinstall now. Thanks

Hi @megang351,
I am the The_Fossette. It looks like you were interacting with @Jeet_singh, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.
I would like to inform you that this issue usually occurs when there is a virus or a malware on your computer.
I recommend you to run a full scan on your computer and make sure there are no virus or malware. For malware, you can also use malware bite and run that on your computer.
If the issue persists, then follow the steps in the below article.
Let me know how it goes and you have a good day ahead.
Take care!
Cheers!

Hi,
I thought it may have been a virus or malware but I have checked that more times than I can count - even installing other programs just in case they were better than what I had. None of them picked up anything.
I have also been through that list previously and nothing changed. Currently disabling the touchpad while using another mouse device seems to be having a positive effect although not totally resolved.

Hi @megang351,
Thank you for the information.
If an external mouse is working fine then the issue is with the touchpad. I recommend you to follow the steps in the below video and check if it helps.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
Take care.
Cheers!

Hi @megang351,
Thank you for replying,
I appreciate your time and efforts,
As I understand you have followed the steps suggested and still having the issue with the mouse jumps all over the screen. Since you are having the issue even while using an external mouse, I would suggest this be an issue with the PC. I would recommend you perform a System Recovery using the partition available on your PC. Doing this will wipe off everything and set the computer back to the original factory conditions. So, please remember to back up your data before initiating system recovery. If for some reason the recovery fails. The only other way to install Windows would be to order the recovery media for your laptop and using the recovery media you can install Windows. You can check if the recovery media is available online on www.hp.com/drivers by entering the exact model no. of your laptop. To find the exact model no. click here: http://hp.care/2bygf7l
Otherwise, you could also reach HP phone support to order the recovery media. If your product is out of warranty, please choose paid options to get the tech support number.
Please use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone numberCase number and phone number appear.
They will be happy to assist you immediately.
Keep me posted for any other assistance,
Regards,
Jeet_Singh
