MAC, Safari 18.6, is not wirelessly printing on my HP Officejet 8600. This problem cropped up a few years back, I used the Bonjour approach. Now it's back, if I hit print, it says "offline". I can hardwire it and get it to print, that's it.

Hi @Allen1952,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be to see your HP OfficeJet 8600 show up as “offline” on your Mac running Safari 18.6, especially when it used to work fine with Bonjour. Let’s walk through a solution that brings your printer back online wirelessly and reliably.

Step-by-Step Fix for HP OfficeJet 8600 Showing Offline on macOS

1. Restart Everything

  • Turn off your printer.
  • Restart your Mac and your Wi-Fi router.
  • Turn the printer back on and wait for it to connect to Wi-Fi.

2. Ensure Printer and Mac Are on the Same Network

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Wireless Settings > Network Configuration.
  • Confirm it’s connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac.

3. Reset the Printing System on macOS

This clears old drivers and stale connections.

  1. Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose “Reset printing system…”.
  3. Re-add your printer using Bonjour or AirPrint.

4. Use HP App’s Diagnose & Fix Tool

This tool can automatically detect and fix offline issues.

5. Update Printer Drivers

Sometimes macOS updates can cause driver mismatches.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Vikram, thank you for getting back to me. Several things…the problems cropped up when we went to a new router from Xfinity. The router works fine for everything else, the printer can see the name I assigned to the router , but rejects the password that works with everything else. I can print by using a USB cable direct from the laptop, btw. Also, on the HP Smart site, when I enter the HP printers serial number, it rejects it. Printer may be over ten years old.
I would like to hear your thoughts.
