i have the same issue, i power cleaned it started it back up and im connected to the wifi it says connected but it still says “please connect to the internet to update your Chromebook”

I never power cleaned mine, but did stop using it for a month and its working better now idk why. If yours does not have an Ethernet cable  port on your laptop you can a buy usb adapter on amazon for a couple bucks, . then you can plug it into your router directly.
