Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fb1000 (7Y8M8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

So recently my wifi speeds have been low. I used to be able to multi task with no problem but now i need to close certain apps just to get usable network speeds. I did a speed test by ookla and my speeds arent going above like 20mbs when im usually at 500mbs download and 300mbs upload (the speeds my parent is paying for). Its not a provider issue so im genuinely lost. Any tips or suggestions?

Hi @OwuraOfori,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for sharing the details! If your Victus by HP 15-fb1000 used to get 500 Mbps but now struggles at 20 Mbps, and you’ve confirmed it’s not your ISP, the issue is likely device-specific, either driver, settings, or hardware. Here’s how to troubleshoot:

Step 1: Check Network Adapter Settings

  1. Press Windows + X → Device Manager → Network Adapters.
  2. Find your Wi-Fi adapter (likely Realtek RTL8852BE or MediaTek).
  3. Right-click → Properties → Advanced
    • Preferred Band: Set to Auto or 5 GHz.
    • Channel Width: Set to Auto.
    • Roaming Aggressiveness: Medium or High.

Step 2: Update Wi-Fi Drivers

Step 3: Disable Power Saving for Wi-Fi

  • Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Advanced settings.
  • Under Wireless Adapter Settings, set Maximum Performance.

Step 4: Reset Network Settings

  • Open Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced Network Settings → Network Reset.
  • Restart the PC and reconnect to Wi-Fi.

Step 5: Test on a Different Band

  • If your router supports dual-band, connect to 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz.
  • Check speeds again.

Step 6: Disable VPN or Security Software

  • VPN/firewall can throttle speeds, disable temporarily and test.

Step 7: Run HP Diagnostics

I hope this helps.
