Hi @Cammie4,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-e2000 (2J4W0AV) not achieving 1 Gbps speeds and instead capping at 100 Mbps, here are some steps you can follow to diagnose and fix the problem:
1. Check Ethernet Cable
- Ensure you are using a Cat 5e, Cat 6, or higher-rated Ethernet cable. Older cables (like Cat 5) only support up to 100 Mbps speeds, while Cat 5e or Cat 6 can handle 1 Gbps.
2. Check Ethernet Port Settings
- Go to Device Manager:
- Right-click on the Start Menu and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network Adapters.
- Right-click on your Ethernet adapter (it may be listed as Intel, Realtek, or another brand) and select Properties.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Look for a setting called Speed & Duplex.
- Change it from Auto-Negotiation to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex.
3. Check Network Adapter Drivers
- Make sure your network adapter drivers are up to date.
- You can do this by going to Device Manager, expanding Network Adapters, right-clicking your Ethernet adapter, and selecting Update driver.
- Alternatively, you can download the latest driver from the manufacturer's website (e.g., Intel or Realtek).
4. Router and Switch Configuration
- Verify that the Ethernet port on your router or switch supports 1 Gbps. Some ports may be limited to 100 Mbps.
- Try connecting your laptop to a different port on the router to rule out port limitations.
- Restart the router and ensure no bandwidth-limiting settings (like QoS or bandwidth capping) are enabled.
5. Check Network Cable & Port
- Test the laptop with a different Ethernet cable.
- Test the laptop on a different network if possible to rule out issues with your router or ISP.
6. Check ISP Plan
- Verify with your ISP that your plan supports 1 Gbps speeds, and confirm that they are delivering those speeds to your home.
7. Run a Speed Test
- After making the above changes, run a speed test using a reliable service (like speedtest.net) while connected to Ethernet.

I hope this helps.
