Hi, Graham:
Sorry that driver didn't work. If you google the ID, every hit I found indicates that the device ID decodes to the Intel Virtual Buttons Driver.
The problem is, none of the drivers allow me to look into the driver folder to see if there is support for that ID.
See if this other version works...
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71132.exe
The other issue needs the Intel HD graphics/audio driver to be installed.
This package provides the driver that enables the Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver.

Hi Paul,
The second version of that Intel Virtual Buttons driver worked! Success!
The next driver you suggested for HD audio unfortunately didn't. I googled it myself and wow, what a world of available drivers. I'm impressed you've learned how to navigate through it all. Most point to a Win7 OS whereas I'm on Win8.1 Pro.
The hardware ID's on the missing driver are:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8086&DEV_2808&SUBSYS_80860101&REV_1000
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8086&DEV_2808&SUBSYS_80860101
I've attached another screenshot of Device Manager below.
Cheers and thanks again for all the effort you've put into helping me resolve this,
Graham

Hi, Graham:
So, when you installed the Intel HD Graphics driver I posted above (sp73227), that didn't work?
Or did it just install the graphics adapter and not the HDMI audio?
If it installed the graphics adapter, you should be able to put the PC to sleep and under the Display Adapters device manager category, there should be an Intel HD graphics adapter listed.
So, before we proceed any further (I am pretty sure I can help you get the HD audio device installed one way or the other), I first have to know if the Intel graphics driver I posted for you installed the graphics adapter.
If it did not, try this other Intel graphics driver which was also on your notebook's support page.

Hi Paul,
Solved!!
The HD Graphics driver you pointed me towards worked. There was only a Basic Graphics driver installed, but the last one you suggested worked.
Fantastic. No more missing drivers. I can adjust screen brightness and put the computer into sleep mode.
Hats off, Thanks again for all you time and effort, I've learned a lot through the process.
Cheers, much obliged,
Graham
