We need techinical information regarding laptop HP Pavilion - 15-cw1021na

We have 5GBPS internet service , and have been struggling to get speeds beyond 1 gigabit , using the 1 RJ-45 LAN port which appears to be limited to 1GB data speed?

Information about the laptop indicates that the laptop has ....

Network interface specification - Integrated 10/100/1000 GbE LAN

We are currently struggling to get speeds up 1GB using the RJ-45 lan port!

We need advice on how to achieve 1000Gbe which seems to be incicated on the laptop LAN specifications

Ideally we would like to connect to the internet router using the LAN port and a cat 7 or 8 bable

However, if the data transfer speed is actually limited to 1000mbps (1GB) on the laptop RJ-45 port , we need advice about if any of the USB ports (including Type C which indicated up to 5Gbps) , can be used with a network adaptor to achieve speeds closer to 5Gbps

Please advise as soon as possible

regards

Hi @Shankill777

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for laying out the situation so clearly—and I completely understand the urgency. When you're working with a 5Gbps internet service, it's frustrating to be bottlenecked by hardware limitations.

Let’s break down the technical capabilities of your HP Pavilion 15-cw1021na and explore viable options to unlock higher speeds.

Native Network Interface: RJ-45 LAN Port

  • Specification: Integrated 10/100/1000 GbE LAN
  • Maximum Speed: 1 Gbps (1000 Mbps)
  • This is a hardware limitation. The RJ-45 port is capped at Gigabit Ethernet, so even with Cat 7 or Cat 8 cables, you won’t exceed 1 Gbps unless the port supports 2.5G, 5G, or 10G Ethernet—which this model does not.

USB Ports and High-Speed Networking Potential

Your laptop includes:

USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port

  • Max theoretical speed: 5 Gbps
  • Supports data transfer and display output, but not Thunderbolt

USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports

  • Max theoretical speed: 5 Gbps

These ports can be used with a USB-to-Ethernet adapter that supports 2.5G or 5G Ethernet, provided the adapter is compatible with Windows 11 and your laptop’s chipset.

Recommended Solution: Use a USB-C or USB-A to 2.5G/5G Ethernet Adapter

  • Choose a USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-C or Type-A) to 2.5G/5G Ethernet adapter.
  • Confirm the adapter supports Windows 11 and includes drivers for Realtek or Aquantia chipsets.
  • Connect the adapter to your router using Cat 6a or higher cabling.
  • Install any required drivers from the adapter manufacturer.
  • Test speeds using a direct connection and a reliable speed test tool.

HP offers driver support for its own USB-C to RJ45 Adapter, though this model is typically limited to 1 Gbps. For higher speeds, third-party adapters from brands like QNAP, TRENDnet, or Sabrent may be more suitable.

Additional Considerations

  • Ensure your router supports multi-gig LAN ports (2.5G/5G/10G).
  • Disable any power-saving features on USB ports via Control Panel > Power Options > USB Settings.
  • Use Device Manager to confirm the adapter is recognized under Network Adapters.

You’re absolutely right to explore alternatives beyond the built-in LAN port. With the right adapter and cable setup, your laptop can tap into much more of that 5Gbps service. I’m happy to assist further.

Let’s make sure you get the speeds you’re paying for.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
