Hi @edgeda2,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've already replaced the battery in your HP Pavilion Gaming 17 laptop, but the new one has now stopped charging. There are a few possible causes for this issue, and I'll guide you through troubleshooting steps to identify the root cause.
Check the Battery Drivers
Sometimes, a problem with the drivers can prevent your battery from charging properly.
- Step 1: Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
- Step 2: Expand the Batteries section.
- Step 3: Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall.
- Step 4: After uninstalling, restart your laptop. The driver should automatically reinstall.
Check if the battery starts charging after this.
Check for BIOS or Firmware Updates
Battery issues can sometimes be linked to outdated BIOS or firmware.
- Step 1: Go to the HP Support website and enter your laptop’s serial number or model.
- Step 2: Check for any available BIOS or firmware updates.
- Step 3: Download and install any updates, then restart your laptop and see if the battery starts charging.
Power Reset the Laptop
Performing a power reset can sometimes fix charging issues.
- Step 1: Shut down your laptop and unplug it from any power sources.
- Step 2: Remove the battery (if possible) and hold down the power button for 15-30 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Step 3: Reconnect the battery and plug in the charger. Turn the laptop on and check if it starts charging.
Test with Another Charger
The charger itself might be the issue. If you have access to another compatible charger, try using that to see if the battery charges.
Battery Calibration
If the battery is recognized but doesn't charge properly, recalibration may help.
- Step 1: Charge the battery to 100%, then let it discharge completely by running the laptop on battery power until it shuts off.
- Step 2: Charge it back to 100% and check if this helps improve the charging behavior.
Inspect the Battery Connections
Double-check that the battery is seated properly in the laptop and that there are no visible issues with the connections or any damage.

Test the Battery
If possible, run an HP diagnostic to check the health of the battery.
- Step 1: Turn off the laptop and press Esc repeatedly, then press F2 when the HP Startup Menu appears.
- Step 2: Select System Diagnostics, and run the Battery Test to check for any issues.
Check for a Faulty Battery
If the new battery is indeed faulty, and you've tried all the above steps, contact HP support or the seller for a potential replacement.
Reset Power Settings
If none of the above works, resetting the power settings could help.
- Step 1: Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
- Step 2: Choose Change plan settings next to your current plan, then Restore default settings for this plan.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
