My laptop is old Windows 7 but has been great till today. The WIFI BUTTON is stuck on ORANGE/OFF - I have tried uninstalling in device manager, resetting the bio F9 - tried download HP WIFI assistant - shows wifi ON but in corner by the clock the wifi is RED X no signal. Tried taking battery out and also the wifi card and cleaning connections which did not look at all dirty. NOTHING has helped. Is it time for new card - I like this laptop as a backup in case other goes down. Any suggestions? and are there multiple wifi cards that work in this laptop? Realtek RT 5390 is the card in it now.
thanks for help HP PAVILION g6 Windows 7 64 bit

Hi @Lovefood_53,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've tried many troubleshooting steps, but the Wi-Fi button on your HP Pavilion g6 remains stuck on orange, indicating that the Wi-Fi is off. Here are some additional steps to consider before replacing the Wi-Fi card:
1. Check Physical Wi-Fi Switch
- Wi-Fi Button: Ensure the physical Wi-Fi button or switch on your laptop is working correctly. Press it multiple times to see if it responds.
- Function Key: Sometimes, the Wi-Fi toggle is also associated with a function key (Fn + one of the F1-F12 keys, typically with a Wi-Fi icon). Try toggling it using the Fn key combination.
2. BIOS Settings
- Check BIOS Settings Again: Enter the BIOS/UEFI setup by pressing F10 (or another key, as specified during startup) and ensure the Wi-Fi is enabled. Sometimes the settings can be overlooked.
3. Device Manager
- Check Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager, Expand the Network adapters section.
- Right-click on the Realtek RT 5390 adapter and select "Enable" if it’s disabled.
- If it's enabled, try disabling and then re-enabling it.
4. Power Management Settings
- Disable Power Saving for Wi-Fi Adapter:
- Go to Device Manager.
- Right-click on the Wi-Fi adapter and select Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
5. HP Wireless Assistant
- HP Wireless Assistant: You've already tried this, but ensure it is fully updated and correctly installed. Sometimes reinstalling the software can help.
6. Driver Issues
- Update Drivers: Make sure you have the latest drivers for your Realtek RT 5390 Wi-Fi card. Download the latest drivers from the HP Support Website or Realtek’s website.
- Roll Back Drivers: If you recently updated the drivers, try rolling back to a previous version. In Device Manager, go to the Wi-Fi adapter properties and under the Driver tab, click "Roll Back Driver" if available.
7. Network and Sharing Center:
- Go to Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings.
- Right-click on the wireless network connection and select "Enable" if it’s disabled.
8. Windows Network Diagnostics
- Run Troubleshooter: Right-click on the network icon in the taskbar and select "Troubleshoot problems." Follow the prompts to diagnose and fix issues.
9. Check for Software Conflicts
- Antivirus/Firewall: Sometimes security software can interfere with network connections. Temporarily disable any antivirus or firewall software to see if it resolves the issue.
10. Consider a New Wi-Fi Card
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
