There are many things that can go wrong with wifi.

HERE is a good place to start your troubleshooting.

If the issue seems to happen when returning from Sleep Mode then you can skip to the wifi Power Options configuration.

Most wireless devices can be turned off by the system to save power. In some sleep scenarios, the device may not wake properly when the system returns from sleep or hibernate. To prevent this from happening, adjust the power management settings for the wireless adapter

  1. From the Start screen, type device manager to open the Search charm, and then select Device Manager from the search results.
  2. Figure 29: Search results for Device Manager
  3. Search results for Device Manager
  4. Double-click Network Adapters to expand the list, right-click the wireless (Wi-Fi) adapter in the list, and then select Properties.

  5. In the adapter properties window, click the Power Management tab.
  6. Remove the check mark next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, and then click OK.

Close the Device Manager, restart the notebook computer, and attempt to reconnect to the wireless network.

Wireless connectivity issues can be hard to pin down.

Here is a tool which covers many of the settings that you would need to tweak manually all in one, free, easy to use program.

I would create a system restore point beforehand as a precaution.

Mine is hp pavilion g7 D1C31UA.

Running Windows 8 64 bit.

All Windows Updates done.

Tried HP Recovery Manager reinstallation of wifi drivers.

Everything I have found in forums has also failed, including this. BTW, when I went to restart an error dialog flashed too fast for me to read it.

My wifi button always orange. It toggles airplane mode on and off, but that's all. Read in one suggestion about re-installing chipset, but there is nowhere I can find that. When I search for drivers download, entering my product number above returns the notebook series and limited drivers with NO chipset option. From what I read this is a widespread problem. One customer even suggested giving up completely and buying a usb wifi adapter. This CAN'T be such an insurmountable problem. For pay driver services all over Internet offer download andinstallation of the chipset. Why is it so hard to find directly from HP?

Any help is appreciated as I really want my wifi to work.

Oh, on  the Windows Device Manager, Network Adapters, there is ONLY the Realtek PCIe Family Controller (the Ethernet, which works). There is NO other device, and certainly NO wifi device listed.

Searching with my product numbmer, I get that mine is an HP Pavilion g7-2325dx Notebook PC.

Under Driver-Network options there is NO wifi adapter driver, only the Realtek LAN driver.

The HP Recovery Manager lists HP wireless Button Driver for Windows 8, which I've installed, doing nothing.

Also lists Ralink 802.11 WiFi Adapter for Windows 8, which I have also installed, doing nothing.

Also lists Update for Intel Wireless LAN Drivers for Windows 8, also installed and doing nothing.

On the Drivers and Downloads page for Windows 8 64bit HP Pavilion g7-2325dx Notebook PC I see two wireless LAN drivers listed. One for a Qualcomm wireless adapter and the other for a Ralink Adapter.

But since nothing is showing in Device Manager for a wireless adapter there is a real possibility that your wireless card has simply failed. :Crying:

You can check in the BIOS to see if the card is listed/enabled.

To start Setup Utility (BIOS), turn on or restart the computer, press the ESC key, a menu will appear, press f10. Information about how to navigate in Setup Utility (BIOS) is located at the bottom of the BIOS screen.

The Drivers and Download page also shows a BIOS update: F.2A Rev. A   Sept. 2016

It doesn't specifically address a WiFi LAN issue or fix but it is "strongly recommended" by HP.

If you don't have it installed already you should update.

As you can see, using your own link to the drivers page, there are NO wireless LAN drivers listed at all, and only one Ethernet LAN listing for a Realtek adapter driver, so I have no idea what you are looking at.

I also went to the BIOS settings. There are precious little changes one can make there, and I don't see anywhere anything about a BIOS update.

I also read from one of your HP experts reference to re-installing the chipset, but again, I can't find any such thing on your site.

clicked on your link:

Expanded the Driver-Network link:

Realtek.png

I didn't think of trying to take a screenshot of the BIOS listings, but there was nothing there about wireless network adapter(s).  Also, the page you provided link to Drivers and Downloads does NOT have a BIOS update of any revision or date

Any more ideas?

Another problem. I ran full scan with Windows Defender (up to date) and it found a Trojan: win32/Dynamer!ac.

I don't know if it removed it, but I tried to do a clean boot scan with a number of bootable DVDs that I know work because I have run them on many computers including others at home. I checked. They boot on ANY other pc, except my HP. I tried everything I could in the BIOS setup but it does not allow ANY bootable DVD to boot up. What is up with that?

I don't think Windows Defender removed anything because it keeps giving message that malware detected.
