My RT5390R 802.1 1bgn Wifi adapter keeps "dropping out" or disappearing from My devices so cannot connect to internet.

I can be browsing the internet when wifi cuts out. I "troubleshoot and it find a problem and resets the wifi adapter. This will work for a few minutes then it stops again. I go to Device Manager, network adapters and the RT5390R 802.1 1bgn Wifi adapter has disappeared. More troubleshooting, comes up connect with Ethernet, which means sitting on the stairs to use internet or I have to turn off notebook wait 10 minutes. Restart and it all works again. Wifi adapter has reappeared.

Is this a software or hardware problem, (sorry not very IT literate. Can it be repaired or can I do something to stop it happening?

Hi:

See if updating the wifi card driver to the latest version for W7 helps any.

5.0.53.0

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71421.exe

If that doesn't help, then it is most likely a hardware issue with the wifi card.

You can try removing and firmly reseating the wifi card.

Disconnect the PC from the power source and remove the battery.

Sometimes the contacts get oxidized, and that breaks the electrical contact between the card and the slot it goes into.  Leave the antenna wires connected to the card to facilitate an easy reinstallation.

Consult the service manual for your specific model g6 (there are hundreds of model variations) for the wifi card removal and replacement procedure.

If updating the driver and/or removing and reseating the wifi card doesn't resolve the issue, then the wifi card would have to be replaced, and depending on what model g6 you have, you may have to replace it with the exact same part number or the PC won't boot up.

Paul,

Thanks for the advice. I have downloaded the driver. Will wait to see what happens before trying the next step.

Thanks again

Unfortunately nothing worked so looks like I will have to have the adapter replaced. Went to my computer shop wouldn't rplace adapter until he checked the whole notebook in case it was something else. Trying to make money.

Needless to say I didn't bother , Bought an external wifi adapter USB, £9.99 from Argos working perfectly.
