Victus by HP Gaming Laptop 15-fa0000 (680A7AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller on HP Victus 15-fa0000 won't auto negotiate Gigabit speeds on a proven Gigabit connection. I have used a J5create docking station with Gigabit ethernet as well as an Anker USB-C to Gigabit ethernet adapter on the same computer with the same cable to the same router on the same port on the router and these devices will connect at gigabit speeds. The built in Realtek ethernet port on this laptop however chooses 100Mb instead. Interestingly the Anker ethernet USB-C adapter internally uses a Realtek USB GbE Family Controller which doesn't suffer from the same issue. I have attempted to uninstall the device, but the issue persists after it is re-installed. I checked the driver version, and it is up to date based on the driver listed on HP's official website. I have tried using both the Windows and HP's proprietary Network troubleshooters and neither see anything wrong. I have compared the settings between the two Realtek NICs and have not found anything that is different. I have looked upon the site for other's who seem to have similar issues but none of them seem to have found a conclusive solution that worked for me. Annoyingly if I plug in the docking station's Gigabit ethernet and then move the network cable to the built in ethernet port THEN it stays connected at gigabit speeds. I feel like this points to an issue with the auto-negotiation with the internal NIC. Does anyone have a solution to this? Seems silly that I have to use a USB-C dongle to work around this issue.

Hi @Toxygene,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

There could be several reasons why the Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller on your HP Victus 15-fa0000 laptop is not auto-negotiating Gigabit speeds. Here are some possible solutions.

  • Check the network cable: Make sure you are using a Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable that is capable of Gigabit speeds. Check the cable for any visible damage or kinks. Try using a different cable to see if it resolves the issue.
  • Update the driver: Visit the Realtek website and download the latest driver for your Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller. Install the driver and restart your laptop to see if it resolves the issue.
  • Check the network settings: Ensure that your network adapter is set to auto-negotiate the connection speed. To check this, right-click on the network adapter in Device Manager, select Properties, click on the Advanced tab, and make sure the "Speed & Duplex" setting is set to "Auto Negotiation".
  • Disable any power-saving features: Some laptops have power-saving features that can slow down the network adapter to save power. To check if this is the case, go to Device Manager, right-click on the network adapter, select Properties, click on the Power Management tab, and uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option.
  • Check the router or switch: If none of the above solutions work, the issue may be with the router or switch that the laptop is connected to. Try connecting the laptop to a different router or switch to see if it resolves the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
