Virgin are teliing me that the wi-fi in this laptop will only use 100 mbps which is why I cannot get 299 which I have paid for.
I need to find out if this is correct

It is not a very good wireless adapter but it is "N" so theoretical max speed of 300 mbps that is megabits per second.
If your adapter has only 1 antenna, which is possible, then the theoretical max is 150 mbps.
In reality it will be less than that. Who did you pay for 299? Not real clear who you are blaming here, Virgin or Realtek or HP?

Sorry that's a typo it should read 200.
Virgin in touch and upgraded some services for free, I think because the current agreement was about to run out.
As part of that upgrade they affered a new wi-fi router which could handle speeds of up to 200 mbps.
I installed it and found I was getting nothing like that. When I phoned up they said I couldn't get that speed because the adapter was not capable of running at that speed....
So I am definitely blaming Virgin.
Thanks

Well it is very likely you are being constrained by the wifi adapter. A better one would easily allow you to get the 200 mbps speed but the problem is your laptop likely only has one antenna so you will not achieve better than 150 mbps and 100 is probably even a bit optimistic. A usb wifi dongle may be a viable option.
