I suggest to do a backup (documents etc..) and then a fresh install:
I believe it will work after a fresh install..

Yes, but what if the new driver won't help and the error stays? I would actually do some maintenance as the upgrade could have messed up registry, but before I would uninstall the Realtek driver first. After the cleanup and reboot take another shot on the driver..

I would do a backup and then perform a factory reset using F11 at startup (Recovery partition and HP Tools partition must be still present). It will restore the system to the state before the first start and keep Windows 8. Or use the manual to install Windows 8.1 as a fresh install.
I have just realized that Windows have some hardware drivers for most frequent hardware already built-in so the error actually could be a conflict between the new MS driver (if there is one) from Windows 8.1 and the old original Realtek driver installed in Windows 8.

Applied windows 8.1 - Ethernet not working - code 35.
So whats next?
Next could be restore PC to factory default. Apply all updates and voala, ethernet works.:)
Is there a reason why to update to 8.1? If not, do not update!! The same principle is applied with the BIOS.:)
