Hi @AlanB13,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Your USB to Ethernet adapter is being misidentified as a Realtek CD-ROM (RTL_UL) because some Realtek USB network adapters have a built-in virtual CD-ROM mode containing drivers. Normally, it should switch to Ethernet mode, but sometimes it gets stuck.
First, let's disable the Realtek Virtual CD-ROM mode. Open Device Manager by pressing Win + X and selecting Device Manager. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives and look for something like Realtek RTL_UL. If it's listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers, check there too. Right-click Realtek RTL_UL and click Disable device.
If needed, you can uninstall the device by right-clicking Realtek RTL_UL, selecting Uninstall device, checking Delete the driver software for this device, and clicking Uninstall. Then, unplug and reinsert the USB to Ethernet adapter.
I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?"—your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍✨
Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀
Best regards,
Kuroi_Kenshi
