You're very welcome.
Unfortunately, I don't have any other suggestions for you to try regarding the Ralink wifi adapter.
As far as an external USB adapter, there are hundreds on the market to choose from.
This one seems good to me because it does not stick out too far of the USB port...but I suggest you just check out a few models.

Hi:
Your notebook comes with a Ralink RT3290LE 802.11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 combination adapter.
Anytime you see a wireless N adapter with a suffix that ends in b/g/n, that means it is a single band (2.4 GHz) only wifi adapter. It cannot connect to the 5.0 GHz wifi band.
Dual band wifi N adapters have suffixes that end in a/b/g/n or a/g/n.
For the wireless issue on the 2.4 Ghz band, the only suggestion I can offer would be to install the latest W8 wifi driver for the Ralink wifi adapter.
5.0.53.0 Rev.D May 18, 2015
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71421.exe
If you want dual band wifi capability, you would have to replace the Ralink wifi card with a dual band wifi card.

You're very welcome.
While the card I recommend is not listed in the service manual, I believe you can install this model wifi adapter in your notebook since it has an Intel processor...
Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11 ac 2x2 WiFi + BT 4.0 HP Part # 710661-001
The card is readily available on Amazon or eBay.
Do your search by the HP part #, not the model of the wifi card.
Before installing the card, uninstall the Ralink wifi and bluetooth drivers first in the device manager, and you may also have to uninstall the Ralink Bluetooth software in the Windows Control Panel>Programs section.
Here are the links to the W8 wifi and bluetooth drivers for the Intel wifi card...

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp68001-68500/sp68481.exe
Here is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
The wifi card R & R procedures can be found in chapter 4.
