Hi everyone,
I need to clarify something important before performing a hardware upgrade on my HP Pavilion 14-al001la.

I’m planning to replace the stock WiFi module with a Broadcom BCM94352Z (DW1560) for improved compatibility and performance. However, I’m aware that many HP systems — especially Pavilion and older ProBook models — enforce a BIOS-level whitelist that blocks non-HP-approved wireless cards, often resulting in the error:
“104-Unsupported wireless network device detected”
(or the system refusing to boot entirely).

Before I proceed, I urgently need to confirm:

  • Does the 14-al001la enforce a wireless card whitelist?

  • Has anyone successfully installed a BCM94352Z or any non-HP wireless module on this exact model or series?

  • If whitelist restrictions exist, is there any known workaround or confirmed compatible alternative?

Any technical insight, personal experience, or confirmation would help me avoid a failed upgrade.
Thanks in advance for your support!

Hi:

HP does not publish any information on what notebooks have BIOS whitelists.

Generally most notebooks made in 2014 or later do not, but there are a few exceptions and the 14-al model series was made after 2014.

I don't believe that the 14-alXXX model series has a BIOS whitelist, but what I don't know is if your notebook has two antenna wires because most of the notebooks that come with the single band Broadcom BCM43142 802.11 bgn Wi-Fi M.2 Combo Adapter only have one antenna wire.

I would confirm the number of antenna wires in the notebook before buying a Wi-Fi card.

If there are two antenna wires, the BCM94352Z should work, but you may as well set you sights higher and go for the Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6 non-vPro.

Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 ax 2×2 + Bluetooth 5.0 MU-MIMO M.2 2230 non-vPro 160 MHz PCI-e + USB WW with 2 antenna(s)   HP part # L35282-005/Intel SPS # L35282-005.

Otherwise a direct swap to a dual band card where only one antenna wire is needed, would be this card:

Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11ac 1 × 1 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.2 Combo Adapter (MU-MIMO supported)HP part # L17365-005.
