Product: HP Pavilion 15z M7D88AV
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am looking to either replace or uprgrade my WLAN card for my HP Pavilion 15z, item number M7D88AV.  I realize that the stock card is only 2.4 GHz, but when I test my Wifi connection i usually get speeds of between 10 and 30 Mbs, sometimes as low as 5 Mbs.  When I use the same speed test on my phone, iPhone 6, i get 100-110 Mbs, which matches my Comcast service.  My Laptop was ordered October of 2015 and the WLAN part number is K8Y73AV.  I tried looking for a replacement, but could not find one.  So is there a replacement WLAN card, and is it possible to have a replacement card that uses the 5Ghz range?

Hi:

 

Here is the issue you are facing....

 

Your notebook only has one antenna present and connected to the Realtek wifi card in there now.

 

All but one dual band wifi cards that I know of require two antennas be connected to the wifi card.

 

The only suggestion I can offer, but I cannot confirm this card will work in your model, would be to try this model wifi adapter.

 

RTL8821CE 802.11 ac 1x1 WiFi + Bluetooth 4.2 Combo Adapter (MU-MIMO supported) HP Part # L17365-005.

 

The only place I have been able to find them is on eBay. They are not too expensive.

That card has been on back order on the HP parts store for months now.

 

The absolute maximum throughput your current wifi adapter has is 72 MBPS on the 2.4 GHz wifi band.

 

That would be with an excellent wifi signal.

 

With that adapter, you should be getting around 40 - 50 MBPS download speeds.

 

With the adapter I suggested, the performance would be the same as you are getting now on the 2.4 GHz wifi band.

 

But on the 5.0 GHz band, the 8821CE has a maximum throughput of 433 MBPS with an excellent wifi signal.

 

For now, try updating the wifi driver and see if that helps any...
