Hi,
I was away 2 weeks ago and since I came back I have had this problem with my computer.
When left idle I loose complete internet connection and need to reboot.... I can't even reconnect... I have tried to use the HP Assistant and it keeps telling me an ethernet cable is not plugged in properly but I am using wifi and no ethernet cable is plugged anywhere 😞
I tried detecting the issue using the Hardware app but everything seems to be working properly.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi @JOBELLA
Welcome to the HP Support Community. Thanks for bringing this to our notice.
I see that you are facing WiFi-related issues on your system. Do not worry, we are here to fix it.
May I know from when are you facing this issue?
Did you make any hardware or software-related changes to it?
Did you reinstall the network drivers? or update it from the HP website using a wired internet connection?
While you respond to that, I recommend the below steps:
Go to Device manager > select the WIFI drivers under network adapter> Right click go to properties > Under properties go to Power Management Tab> Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
If the issue persists, continue with the below steps:
- If your computer has a wireless key or button on or near the keyboard and the wireless activity light is off or amber in color, then press the key or button to enable your wireless adapter. This key might be the F10 key, F12 key or labeled with a symbol of an airplane.
- If wireless activity comes on or the activity light turns blue, you have enabled wireless on your system. Try connecting to the Internet again. If problems persist, continue using these steps.
- If your computer does not have a wireless key or the wireless activity lights remains off or orange then continues using these steps.
- Click Start, type troubleshooting into the Search field.
- Select troubleshooting from the search results.
- Click Network and Internet.
- Click Internet Connections
For more details consider using the HP Guided Troubleshooter:
Click here to access it (simply select your description of the issue from the bottom of the screen to gain access to the next set of steps that should resolve your concern).
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Nirvana,
Thanks for the response. Here are the answers to your questions:
1) This started happening upon my return from holiday on the 26 of June. I was away from the 17th to the 26th so something must have happened while I was away.
2) Not to my knowledge. Updates are automatic on my computer.
3) No never used a wired internet connection.
I have followed your recommended step and will keep you posted.
I have tried using the troubleshooting app but it keeps telling me that an ethernet cable is unplugged. Once I have rebooted the computer it doesn't detect any problems with my network.
Best
Joanna

Hi,
It unfortunately happened again 😞
I did most of the troubleshooting but am confused with the last ones you gave me (I have written my answers in CAPS). I also sent you the answers to our questions in a previous mail
- If your computer has a wireless key or button on or near the keyboard and the wireless activity light is off or amber in color, then press the key or button to enable your wireless adapter. This key might be the F10 key, F12 key or labeled with a symbol of an airplane. I HAVE NO LIGHTS ON MY SPECTRE KEYBOARD
- If wireless activity comes on or the activity light turns blue, you have enabled wireless on your system. Try connecting to the Internet again. If problems persist, continue using these steps. I DON"T HAVE A LIGHT
- If your computer does not have a wireless key or the wireless activity lights remains off or orange then continues using these steps.
- Click Start, type troubleshooting into the Search field. I TRIED THIS AND IT KEEPS TELLING ME NO WIRELESS AVAILABLE AND THAT AN ETHERNET CABLE IS DISCONNECTED BUT HAVE NOT ETHERNET CABLE. WHEN I REBOOT THE SYSTEM AND RUN THE TROUBLESHOOTING APP IT SAYS EVERYTHING IS FINE WITH MY COMPUTER 😞
- Select troubleshooting from the search results.
- Click Network and Internet.
- Click Internet Connections

Thanks for your response.
Could you try connecting to another network or a hotspot to check if the issue persists with another network?
Give these various methods a try: Troubleshooting wireless network and Internet (Windows 10)
Also, you can look at the power management for your wireless adapter:
Disable the Power Off option for the adapter:
1. Open Device Manager. (Win Key+R > type devmgmt.msc > OK)
2. Expand the Network adapters.
3. Right click on the Ethernet/Wireless Adapter and click Properties.
4. Click the Power Management tab.
5. Remove the check mark beside Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
6. Click OK.
7. Test.
Forget a Network (Windows 10): Forget Wireless Network Profiles in Windows 10
Reset the TCP/IP settings on your PC:
1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
3. In the window that opens type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without quotes, and press enter.
4. Restart your PC and test.
It may also help to reset the winsock catalogue:
1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
3. In the window that opens type "netsh winsock reset" without quotes, and press enter.
4. Restart your PC and test.
Reinstall the network adapter drivers:
1. Download the drivers from here but do not run them yet.
2. Go to your start screen/menu and type Device Manager.
3. Expand Network adapters.
4. Right click on the wireless adapter and choose Uninstall.
5. Run the downloaded drivers from step 1.
6. Restart your PC and test.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi,
I am confused...
When this happens the only thing I see in the connection box is "airplane mode". There is nothing else.
Once I reboot it connects with no problem.
I don't understand why it keeps telling me that an Ethernet cable is unplugged when I don't use such a cable.

Hi Nirvana,
Here are my responses to your steps:
1) Step 1: I don't seem to have an Ethernet/Wireless Adapter. I do however have an Intel (R) Dual Band Wireless and TAP Windows Adapter. Which one do I need to right click on.
2) Step 2: I did this step. However, some came out okay some said "requested operation requires elevation (run as administrator)". Should I redo as admin? If so, how do I do this?
3) Step 3: I tried to do this step but got message "requested operation requires elevation (run as administrator)'.
Thanks again for your assistance.
Do you think I should contact Microsoft as well?
Best
