HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fd0000 (70R02AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

New laptop set up in February, 2024 with pre-installed MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E MT7902 Wireless LAN Card version 3.3.0.852.  I am able to connect to the internet but my concern is the ever changing properties of my Wi-Fi.  I will see the correct properties listed which is my SSID, Protocol Wi-Fi6 (802.11ax) and Security type WPA2-Personal.  I can check the properties a minute later and no SSID given, Protocol "Any Radio Type, Security type "Open".  If I check back a few minutes later, no SSID given, Protocol "Unknown", Security type "Unknown".  Also, the network channels can be 7-10 digits long for the "Radio" and "Unknown" properties.  I also check my security history during the time I'm seeing this and there are multiple instances of "IP address has disappeared from Adapter Media-Tek Wi-Fi 6E MT7902 Wireless LAN Card".  My Wi-Fi shows I'm secure but how do I know for sure that I'm on my assigned SSID?

Hi @BB682,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing some inconsistency and potential security concerns with your Wi-Fi connection. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and ensure the security of your network.

  • Update Wi-Fi Drivers: Ensure that your Wi-Fi drivers are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause connectivity issues and strange behavior.
  • Router Settings: Check your router settings to ensure that your SSID (network name) and security settings (WPA2-Personal) are configured correctly. You may need to access your router's configuration page through a web browser to do this.
  • SSID Broadcast: Make sure that SSID broadcast is enabled on your router. If SSID broadcast is disabled, your network won't appear in the list of available networks, which could explain why your laptop sometimes doesn't display the SSID.
  • Signal Interference: Wi-Fi signals can be affected by interference from other electronic devices, neighboring networks, or physical obstacles. Try moving closer to your router or changing the Wi-Fi channel on your router to see if it improves stability.
  • Security Audit: Perform a security audit of your network. Check for any unauthorized devices connected to your network and change your Wi-Fi password if necessary.
  • Network Monitoring: Consider using network monitoring tools or apps to keep track of the devices connected to your network and monitor network activity for any suspicious behavior.

By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and resolve any issues with your Wi-Fi connection, ensuring that you're securely connected to your assigned SSID.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your prompt response.  I followed the steps you suggested.  I am the only user on my network and I have Norton360 Security so I am keeping an eye on things as you suggested.  I also tried troubleshooting including restarting my network adapter, restarting my Xfinity Gateway XB7, and then resetting the network adapter to factory settings.  I do have the current version for the MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E MT7902 Wireless LAN card,  Just to clarify, there is no other "driver" on my laptop, just the MediaTek?  I think that may be the problem, and I would like to know if you would recommend a USB network adapter that I could use to bypass the MediaTek adapter.  I should add I have no prior experience with any of this, and I think USB would be easier for me.  If you agree this is the way to go, can you recommend a USB network adapter with wireless network standard Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)?  I really appreciate your help and hope this finally gets resolved. Again, many thanks.

Hi @BB682,

Thank you for your response,

USB network adapters are generally easier to install and replace compared to internal adapters, making them a convenient option, especially if you're not familiar with hardware troubleshooting.

For your requirement of a USB network adapter supporting Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), here are a few recommendations:

  • TP-Link Archer TX3000E: This USB adapter supports Wi-Fi 6 and is known for its reliable performance and compatibility.
  • Netgear Nighthawk AX8 8-Stream Wi-Fi 6 Adapter (A6210): Netgear is a well-known brand for networking equipment, and this adapter offers Wi-Fi 6 support along with good performance.

Before purchasing any adapter, ensure that it is compatible with your laptop's operating system (most likely Windows) and that it meets your specific requirements. Additionally, check for reviews and user feedback to ensure reliability and compatibility with your setup.

Once you have the USB adapter, installation is usually straightforward. You'll typically need to plug it into an available USB port on your laptop and install any necessary drivers or software provided by HP. After installation, you should be able to connect to your Wi-Fi network using the USB adapter instead of the built-in Wi-Fi card.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks again for your response and recommendations for using a USB adapter for my situation.  I looked at the two adapters you suggested but the one looked liked I needed to install something internally (the pictures made it appear that way). I did find a TP-Link Archer TX20UH AX1800 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 USB 3.0 Adapter that might work for me?  If you think otherwise, please let me know.  Have a good weekend.  Thanks, again.

Update:  I connected the TP-Link Archer TX20UH AX1800 Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 USB adapter and no issues with Wi-Fi properties constantly changing.  That being said, since this is a workaround, can you recommend a different network card for my i5-1335U laptop?  Since I don't have an answer to the reason for the changing properties (I had reached out to HP Support prior to reaching out to the HP Community) I'm guessing it's the MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E MT7902 network card.  I see the Pavilion i5-1235U uses MediaTek Wi-Fi 6 MT7921 network card.  No idea if that card will work either but am I able to download onto my laptop without any BIOS changes?  I have disabled the MT7902 in order to use the TP-Link USB adapter.  As I said earlier, I wanted a simple fix but this is a new computer and an internal adapter would be easier when transporting my laptop. Any suggestions would be welcomed.  Thanks, again.
