Hello,

Have a workhorse Pavilion laptop of some vintage but lots of upgrades...but what it really needs is at a minimum is a  “ac” wireless card rather than the stock 802.11abgn.   Home LAN router has 1750AC rating, and would like to match laptop to faster speeds available.  So, how do I ascertain whether this upgrade is at all possible?

Your machine was built long time before 2015 therefore due to the whitelist in BIOS the chance to upgrade to new wifi adapter is very slim to none. I actually have to use USB adapter for my old machine

There are many around and cheaper. I bought the above adapter much cheaper (same shop) early March 2020.

Regards.

Ah, thanks for the heads-up...a couple of minutes after I posted, the whole locked “whitelist” came back to me...thank you for the USB WiFi dongle link, that’s definitely the way to go, as opposed to a “jailbreak” BIOS mod.
