The wifi speed has gradually become slower and slower. My phone operating beside the laptop always shows good speeds, 500+ when I use my 5 and 250 when I use the 2.4.
I've tried everything, resetting drivers, installing new drivers, network diagnostics tell me everything is fine, but it's not!

Hi @Petemcc64,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
A gradual decline in Wi-Fi speed on your HP Pavilion Laptop PC 15-Eg0000 can be frustrating, especially when other devices are performing well. Here are several steps you can take to further diagnose and resolve the issue:
Check and Update Network Adapter Drivers
Uninstall and Reinstall Network Drivers:
- Press Windows + X and select "Device Manager".
- Expand "Network adapters".
- Right-click on your Wi-Fi adapter and select "Uninstall device". Make sure to check the box for "Delete the driver software for this device".
- Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
- Alternatively, download the latest driver from the HP Support website or the manufacturer's website (e.g., Intel, Realtek) and install it manually.
Update Drivers:
- Ensure you have the latest driver by visiting the HP Support website, entering your laptop model, and downloading the latest Wi-Fi driver available.
Network Settings and Configuration
Forget and Reconnect to the Network:
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.
- Click on "Manage known networks".
- Select your Wi-Fi network and click "Forget".
- Reconnect to your Wi-Fi network by selecting it from the list and entering the password.
Disable Power Saving Mode for Network Adapter:
- Press Windows + X and select "Device Manager".
- Expand "Network adapters".
- Right-click on your Wi-Fi adapter and select "Properties".
- Go to the "Power Management" tab.
- Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
- Click "OK".
Change Wi-Fi Channel:
- Log in to your router's settings page (typically done by entering the router's IP address in a web browser).
- Change the Wi-Fi channel to one that is less congested. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are commonly less congested for 2.4GHz networks.
- Save the changes and restart your router.
Kindly find the next set of steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @Petemcc64 ,
Please find the next set of steps below.
Windows Network Settings
Network Reset:
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
- Scroll down and click on "Network reset".
- Click "Reset now" and confirm.
Disable IPv6:
- Press Windows + X and select "Network Connections".
- Right-click on your Wi-Fi connection and select "Properties".
- Uncheck "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)".
- Click "OK".
Router Settings and Firmware
Update Router Firmware:
- Log in to your router's settings page.
- Check for any available firmware updates and install them.
Optimize Router Placement:
- Ensure your router is placed in a central location, away from thick walls and electronic devices that can cause interference.
Hardware Checks
Check for Interference:
- Ensure there are no electronic devices (like microwaves, cordless phones) causing interference with your Wi-Fi signal.
Test with Ethernet:
- Connect your laptop directly to the router using an Ethernet cable.
- If the speed is significantly better, the issue is likely with the Wi-Fi adapter or signal interference.
Additional Considerations
Check for Malware or Background Programs:
- Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or another trusted antivirus program to ensure there are no malware or background programs consuming bandwidth.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure your Windows operating system is fully updated.
Factory Reset Router:
- As a last resort, consider performing a factory reset on your router. Note that this will erase all custom settings, so you will need to reconfigure your network.
Summary
- Update or reinstall network drivers.
- Forget and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.
- Disable power-saving mode for the network adapter.
- Change Wi-Fi channels on your router.
- Perform a network reset in Windows settings.
- Disable IPv6.
- Update your router's firmware and optimize its placement.
- Check for signal interference and test with an Ethernet connection.
- Scan for malware and check for Windows updates.
- Consider a factory reset for your router if all else fails.
These steps should help you identify and resolve the issue with your Wi-Fi speed. If the problem persists, I recommend you contact phone support for further assistance.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
