I bought a new HP Office Jet Pro 9125e from a Best Buy here in Houston yesterday (08/14/2024). When I went to set it up I called HP (or so I thought) and the call was directed to Win Mac repair. They checked my computer and cleaned it up for $199.00. They also offered a "High-End Unlimited Security and Unlimited Technical Support package for $1,749.00 which I also purchased. So far, the printer appears to be hooked up and working, but I'm wondering if I was scammed to purchasing the Security and tech support package. I obtained a receipt for the charges from a company called PC Packard.

Welcome to the HP English Community --
Unfortunately, it was a Scam.
Pure, simple, and sad.
It does not take much to get lost while wandering around on the 'net looking for help.
One little dot or letter out of place and Poof! You are not anywhere even close to HP.
Many of the scam sites are clever and insidious.
Their agents are trained to lie, cheat, wangle, and convince their victims to give over access to pretty much anything the agent wants to extract: money, access, private information, promises, cooperation.
Your computer was never full of bugs.
There is likely monitoring software installed on that computer -
Anything not tied down securely by encryption might be compromised - files, personal records, pictures of your children, passwords, serial numbers', "anything".
The next time you call, the thieves might tell you something like, "Gee, the software is outdated - you need to pay for an upgrade."
The receipt won't likely do you any good unless you want to go to your bank to report the incident as a scam.
Since you authorized the charges, be prepared to defend your reasons.
What can we do?
Not a lot, though I can -- and will -- forward your message to our Moderator team.
Should there be a response, look for a message here before the agent uses other means to contact you.

Beware of Fake Sites
The "Real Deal"
123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site
Watch out for every dot and letter.
The official HP 123 site is where you can find the appropriate (and free) software and drivers for your printer.
There are many “fake” sites listed (in search engines) for “123” – please make sure you are using the actual “HP” site.
If you are asked for money to correct "issues" on your printer or computer OR if the “help” wants to sell you software, threatens you, or wants access to your computer, you are using a “fake” site. Do not give these people your information!

Worth Noting
- Our HP Community is a peer-to-peer user group.
- We are not HP Technical Support -- We are not associated with HP Sales, Service, or Warranty.
- Our request for assistance on your behalf does not guarantee HP will respond nor does our request influence the outcome.
- The time frame (how long it takes) to receive a response from HP is not controlled by the Community.
Important
- HP does not free-post HP Support numbers on the Internet. Not. Not in secret, not in chat, not in pop-ups, and not so a nice technician can call you back, sneak into your computer, and then tell you your computer is full of bugs.
- Be wary of any posted messages in the Community containing phone or email links – these are likely scammers who mean you harm.
