Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I upgraded from windows 7 pro to windows 8.1 64 bit and suddenly the wireless button started showing "airplane mode on/off" The change has made my laptop unable to connect to WIFI.  I have been unable to load  the  wireless button driver for cnb dchu to make the button function as a wireless on/off button.  Any advice is appreciated.

Are you able to go online with the Ethernet?


If you can, then I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...


HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook


  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.


Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

I apologize for the delay, covid issues.  I downloaded the new support assist and it did not show any new updates. I ran windows update just to be sure that wasn't an issue.   I am able to connect via ethernet.  I am unable to use the wi-fi activation button and it continues to tell me I am in airplane mode on/off therefore, I can't connect to the network wirelessly.  I have been trying to look through wireless button drivers and have been unsuccessful in finding one to fix the problem.  I received the following when trying to look for drivers on the HP support site:

Detected operating system: 


 Windows 8 (64-bit) Choose a different OS
We were unable to retrieve the list of drivers for your product.  Please select the desired operating system and select “Update” to try again.
I love this laptop but it has become a brick with the inability to connect wirelessly.

This product was shipped with win7, and is not tested for any other OS, the driver for other OS's would not be available at HP, and that could be one of the reasons it isn't working, we recommend switching back to win7 using the hp recovery media or contacting a local tech for support.
