My father has a hp pavilion 15- p268tx laptop and quite often the wireless connection drops and the list of network connections does not show if the wireless icon is pressed. Only restart works. Sometimes there is no problem for days but then once it starts, it becomes quite recurring.

Hi @Zamer_64 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your father's HP Pavilion 15-p268tx laptop is experiencing intermittent wireless connection issues. This kind of problem can be caused by various factors, including outdated drivers, power management settings, or hardware-related issues.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help resolve the problem:

1. Update the Wireless Driver

  • Step 1: Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Step 2: Expand Network adapters.
  • Step 3: Right-click on the wireless adapter (e.g., "Realtek", "Intel", etc.) and select Update driver.
  • Step 4: Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  • Step 5: If no update is found, you can visit the HP support website or the manufacturer's site (e.g., Realtek, Intel) to download the latest drivers.

2. Check Power Management Settings

Sometimes, Windows automatically turns off the wireless adapter to save power, which can cause connectivity issues.

  • Step 1: Open Device Manager as described earlier.
  • Step 2: Right-click on the wireless adapter and select Properties.
  • Step 3: Go to the Power Management tab.
  • Step 4: Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  • Step 5: Click OK.

3. Disable/Enable the Network Adapter

When the connection drops, instead of restarting the laptop, you can try this workaround:

  • Step 1: Press Windows + X and open Device Manager.
  • Step 2: Right-click the wireless adapter and choose Disable device.
  • Step 3: After a few seconds, right-click again and select Enable device.

4. Disable WLAN AutoConfig Service Restart (Temporary Fix)

  • Step 1: Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Step 2: Find WLAN AutoConfig in the list and double-click it.
  • Step 3: Click Stop, then after a few seconds, click Start again.
  • Step 4: Set the Startup type to Automatic.

5. Change the Wireless Adapter Settings

  • Step 1: Go to Device Manager.
  • Step 2: Right-click the wireless adapter and select Properties.
  • Step 3: Go to the Advanced tab.
  • Step 4: Change the following settings:
    • 802.11n Mode: Set to Enabled.
    • Preferred Band: Choose Auto or 5 GHz (if the router supports it).
    • Roaming Aggressiveness: Set to Lowest.
    • Wireless Mode: Select the most compatible option (such as 802.11 a/b/g).

6. Update Windows

Ensure that Windows is up to date:

  • Step 1: Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  • Step 2: Go to Update & Security.
  • Step 3: Click Check for updates.

7. Router Compatibility

  • Check if the router’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, router compatibility issues cause network drops.
  • If possible, try connecting the laptop to a different WiFi network to see if the issue persists, which could help identify if the problem is related to the router.

8. Perform a Network Reset

  • Step 1: Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  • Step 2: Go to Network & Internet.
  • Step 3: Scroll down to Network reset and follow the prompts. This will remove and reinstall all network adapters.

As previously mentioned, I am having same problem with wireless network disconnecting.  I was going to follow the recommendation from Gaya1239 and thought the easiest one for me (non-geek) was to check the Check Power Management Settings.  What I found in the Device Manager display (after calling for "hidden device") was that I don't have a wireless adapter?  Which according to a YouTube video might be called "802.11n USB Wireless Lan Card" or similar.  Is that my problem?  I checked a second laptop that isn't having the disconnect problem (yet) and it doesn't have a wireless adapter either.
