The following problem: My new, 10-day-old HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 laptop has 10 times higher WLAN throughput on battery power than when it is connected to the AC power supply. The opposite would be normal. What could be the problem ?

Update:

I have just seen also that the throughput for an ethernet connection is also only around 100 Mbps, both in battery and power mode.
My old pavilion areo 13 achieves 700 to 800 Mbps here

Hi @Renelehnherr,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 laptop might be experiencing a power management issue that's affecting network performance, both on Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Normally, network throughput should not decrease when plugged into AC power, so this could be related to power settings, drivers, or specific network configurations.

Here are a few steps to help resolve the issue:

1. Check Power Settings

  • Windows Power Plan:
    • Go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings.
    • Click on Change plan settings for the currently active power plan, then select Change advanced power settings.
    • Under Wireless Adapter Settings > Power Saving Mode, set both On battery and Plugged in to Maximum Performance.
    • For Processor Power Management, ensure that the Minimum Processor State is set to 100% for Plugged in.

2. Check Network Adapter Settings

  • Press Windows + X, and select Device Manager.
  • Find your Wi-Fi and Ethernet adapters under Network adapters, right-click each, and select Properties.
  • In the Power Management tab, uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  • In the Advanced tab, look for power-saving settings like Energy Efficient Ethernet or Transmit Power, and set them to maximum or disabled.

3. Update or Reinstall Drivers

  • Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters.
  • Right-click on your Wi-Fi and Ethernet adapters, and choose Update driver.
  • If no new drivers are found, visit the HP support website and download the latest network adapter drivers for your Spectre x360.
  • If updating doesn't work, try Uninstalling the network adapter (right-click > Uninstall device) and then restart your laptop to allow Windows to reinstall it.

4. Check the BIOS Settings

  • Enter the BIOS by pressing F10 during startup.
  • Look for any settings related to Power Management or Performance that could affect network speeds when connected to AC power, such as an option to disable power-saving modes or boost performance on AC.

5. Ethernet Connection (100 Mbps Limit)

  • Ensure you're using a Gigabit-capable Ethernet cable (Cat 5e or better).
  • Check if the port on the laptop or adapter supports Gigabit Ethernet. If you're using a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, verify that it's capable of Gigabit speeds.
  • In Device Manager, check the Ethernet adapter's Advanced settings for speed/duplex configuration, and set it to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex.

6. Test with a Different Charger

  • Sometimes, using a different or non-HP AC adapter can cause power delivery issues. If you have access to another compatible HP charger, try testing with that to see if the network speeds change.

7. Check for HP Software or Firmware Updates

  • Use the HP Support Assistant to check for any firmware or software updates that might resolve performance issues.
  • Make sure that your BIOS and Chipset drivers are up to date.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Gaya1239 for your help.

I have gone through all your points but nothing has changed. One point is still interesting: the laptop does not have an old power adapter but it goes via the USB-C socket. And I have the same problem with every USB-C adapter, whether from HP or not. And by the way, the ethernet interface also works via USB-C. That's the problem somewhere.

With best regards
