omen laptop 17-cb,,,,,,,,,,
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am curious about the ethernet ports on my omen gaming laptop.  I'm not the most tech savvy person around but I can't figure out why the omen laptops have rj-45 ethernet ports but household wifi router uses cat-5.  I get blazing fast wifi but want to understand why the hard wired connections are different.  I have a little converter to use but still want to understand this.

I don't know what is your Omen 17-cb..... but I believe it has 10/200/1000 or 1 Gb card. RJ-45 jack/port is a standard for wired (copper, optical as I worked on them before) Network card (NIC) for CAT-5, CAT-5e, CAT-6 .. cable Therefore your CAT-5 (very old) cable will fit to RJ-45 jack.

All normal wifi routers have 4 or more RJ-45 ports, same as RJ-45 port on your Omen and you can use CAT-5 (old) cable to connect them.

Regards.

Thanks.  I was setting up a new Google nest wifi network and the router only has one cat5  open after using the first to connect to modem.  My cable comes into the house in a room away from my office so I have the router there.  I was worried about getting a fast connection and thought i  would have to wire up my omen with the rj45 cable but the wifi is so insanely fast with the new nest wifi that it's no longer a problem.  Again, thanks to everyone for helping so quickly.

I am an idiot......The ethernet port on my omen has the little tab that you pull down for the cat-5 to fit in......My old laptop didn't have that and of course I failed to look at the users manual before posting.
