Hi @Anasch,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Yes, your Core i5 4th generation laptop with 12 GB of RAM and a 128 GB SSD should be able to support a tri-band Wi-Fi card (adapter) upgrade, assuming your laptop has a standard PCIe slot for the wireless adapter.

Here’s what you need to consider before upgrading.

  • Compatibility with PCIe Slot: Most laptops use a PCIe or M.2 slot for the Wi-Fi card. Check the type of slot your laptop uses to ensure compatibility with the new tri-band Wi-Fi card.
  • Antenna Setup: Your current Wi-Fi card likely has a dual antenna setup (for dual-band Wi-Fi). A tri-band Wi-Fi card may require a third antenna for optimal performance. Some laptops come with only two antennas, so you might need to add a third antenna, which could require opening the laptop.
  • Driver Support: Ensure that the tri-band card you plan to install has drivers compatible with your operating system.
  • BIOS Whitelisting (for some brands): Some laptop manufacturers (e.g., Lenovo) limit the types of Wi-Fi cards that can be used in their systems. You may want to check your laptop’s documentation or support page to confirm whether your device supports third-party adapters.

Steps to Solve Wi-Fi Range Issue:

  • Upgrade to Tri-Band Adapter: Install a Wi-Fi 6 tri-band card (such as Intel AX200 or AX210). These adapters offer better range and performance, especially when using modern Wi-Fi 6 routers.
  • Check Your Router: Ensure your router supports Wi-Fi 6 or tri-band connectivity for the best results.
  • Wi-Fi Extenders: If the Wi-Fi range issue persists even after the upgrade, consider using Wi-Fi extenders or mesh networks to boost the range.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
