Hi, the other day my wifi stopped working and the wifi driver no longer shows in Device Manager, all I can use is a USB to connect to the internet.

I've tried a factory reset, tried using HP recovery manager to reinstall the wifi (it shows the RALINK 2011 802.11 b/g/n but this won't reinstall when I try, it just brings up an exclamation mark and says it "may not have properly installed"),

I've tried installing all the normal windows updates, I tried reinstalling the Realtech family controller, I also tried downloading the correct RALINK 802.11 driver from the HP drivers page but this also comes up with "this may not have properly installed" or something to that effect. I've run through these steps several times over several hours for three days but no joy 😞

I also tried taking the WIFI card and putting it back in, it didn't help.

Many thanks for your help in advance!

P.S. I've just discovered using the HP Recovery Manager that when I try to reinstall the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver, this also comes up with a red Exclamation Mark and "this may not have properly installed"

While you respond to that, connect the computer to the network using ethernet and try updating it -

Click on this link to run Windows Updates troubleshooter.

Step 2 Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.

Thanks for replying.

No worries, try those steps at your convenience.

Also, download and install the Wi-Fi driver and the BIOS from this link. The Wi-Fi driver is listed under the option "Driver - Network". To find out the name of the Wi-Fi adapter, go to the device manager.

Keep me posted.

Hi Asmita, I've followed your guidance - there is still no WIFI driver listed in the device manager (the only thing showing in Network Adaptors is the "Realtek PCIe FE Family controller")

(HP recovery manager says the correct WIFI driver is RALINK 2011 802.11 b/g/n...... however this won't reinstall in the Recovery Manager when I try, it just brings up an exclamation mark and says it "may not have properly installed".)

Using your link I installed the BIOS but when I tried to install the RALINK 2011 802.11 b/g/ from your link, once again it said "this program might not have installed correctly"

(Incidentally, in Recovery Manager, the "Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver" also still comes up with a red Exclamation Mark when i try to reinstall and says "this may not have properly installed")

Prior to those steps I tried updating as you suggested, it says it's up-to-date but here are the Windows Updates that failed:
-   Realtek Network - PCIe FE Family Controller error code: 80070103
-   Defintion update Windows Defender Antivirus error code: 8050800C
-   Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3124275) Error Code 80242016

As mentioned before I also tried taking the WIFI card and putting it back in.

Thanks for getting back to us with the information. I'd suggest you try re-installing the operating system -

1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F11 once for System Recovery.
4) Choose the Keyboard Layout.
5) Click on Troubleshoot.
6) Go to Recovery Manager and click on System Recovery.

Note : Back-up all your data as System Recovery will delete everything that you had saved or installed on the computer.

Let me know.

Ok I just reinstalled the operating system exactly as instructed, but I still have no wifi driver in the device manager, when I disconnnect from USB I have no wifi and no wifi option in the network troubleshooter, it just doesn't exist - nothing has changed. Do i need to check for Windows updates again (I have done a couple of factory resets in the last few days, then done all the updates, all to no avail)

And also: "Battery Test: Primary PASSED (0) Secondary - Not Installed (60)"
