Your machine may only support 2.4GHz therefore you need to check and allow your router to broadcast both (dual) bands which are 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz. Your machine now can see 2.4GHz SSID and allow you to connect

it says not connected other networks nearby show up but not mine. If I plug in a wifi dongle a second wifi network lists and my network is on it and it connects OK the problem seems restricted to just the one network. there is a setting or something I am missing somewhere.

Please check its IP address when connect using the dongle and record it then remove the dongle and force your machine to connect to the same IP address OR at least the same first 3 numbers. Is it your machine or someone else ? Please try

found the problem. It was a new driver, I took it back to one that was about 5 years old and it worked.
