HP 840 G3 is a series of many different machines with many different options/combinations/configurations. Did you buy WWAN option with your machine ? Without WWAN option the SIM card won't work.
Please check Device Manager to see: does it have one of the following options
- Broadband Wireless (WWAN) HP lt4120 Qualcomm® Snapdragon X5 LTE Mobile Broadband Module
- HP hs3110 HSPA+ Intel® Mobile Broadband Module
