HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp3000 (9Q8Z1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Right out of the box, the Business laptop  (17-cp3000 (Q8z1av) setup will not complete because it requires a network connection.  When I try to set up the connection, I can only type in 4 characters. My passwords are at least 12 characters and a mix of upper and lower cases alpha, numbers and special characters.  So I have to go back to my failing DELL laptop to have this conversation.  I am not pleased and think that I should have bought another DELL...

@nachomomma, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I’m really sorry to hear about the trouble you're facing with your new HP 17-cp3005dx laptop during setup. I understand how frustrating it must be to run into this issue right out of the box, especially when you're eager to get started.

You're unable to complete the initial setup because the Wi-Fi password field only allows 4 characters, which is far too short for a typical secure password.

Recommended Steps to Resolve:

Option 1: Use the On-Screen Keyboard

  1. On the Wi-Fi password screen, look for the keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Tap it to bring up the on-screen keyboard.
  3. Try entering your full Wi-Fi password using this method.

Sometimes, the physical keyboard layout or driver may not be fully initialized during setup, and the on-screen keyboard bypasses this issue.

Option 2: Skip Wi-Fi Setup Temporarily

  1. On the Wi-Fi setup screen, look for an option like “I don’t have internet” or “Skip for now”.
  2. Proceed with the rest of the setup offline.
  3. Once you reach the desktop, connect to Wi-Fi via:
    • Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi
  4. Enter your full password there, it should accept the full length.

Option 3: Use a Wired Ethernet Connection (if available)

If you have access to an Ethernet cable and port (or a USB-to-Ethernet adapter), you can bypass Wi-Fi entirely during setup.

Option 4: Reset OOBE (if stuck)

If you're stuck and none of the above work:

  1. Press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt.
  2. Type the following and press Enter: oobe
This restarts the setup process and may resolve the glitch.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
