No, it is a hardware issue.
That wifi card was only designed to transmit and receive on the 2.4 GHz band.
There is only one antenna connected to that model wifi card, making an internal upgrade unfeasible as you would have to completely disassemble the notebook including the display panel area, to properly route a second antenna.
Dual band wifi cards require two antennas be connected to them in order for them to function correctly, or at all.

Hi:
The Realtek RTL8723BE 802.11 bgn wifi adapter is a single band (2.4 Ghz) wifi adapter.
Anytime you see a wireless N adapter with a suffix that ends in bgn, that means it is a 2.4 GHz only wifi adapter.
Dual band wifi N adapters have suffixes that end in abgn or agn.

any recommendation on speeds? the reason I started this lil' adventure is to be able to join my son on Fortnite. as my setup is now, Lag wouldn't even be a description so much as straight up seizures (giggle)

Anytime.
I got a free Linksys USB adapter when I bought my Linksys router.
This one...It's small and it works good.
With a dual band AC router, this little guy can do up to 433 MBPS on the 5.0 GHz wifi band, and up to 150 MBPS on the 2.4 GHz band.

If your internet service provides download speeds in excess of 200 MBPS, ideally, you may want one that can go faster, but then they will be larger.
Since I don't have any other USB AC wifi adapters, I can only comment on the performance and reliability of the Linksys 6100 I got for free.
It should work fine for your needs.
