This seems to be two or more questions or possibilities

1 To access your email you can use edge or chrome.

If you use g.mail then probably best to bring up the chrome browser and log into your Google account to get email.

If y.ahoo or att then use the Edge browser and log in using email and password

2 Your laptop needs to connect to the modem / router.

This is done using the Wi-Fi  name (SSID) and the Wi-Fi password.  These items are printed on the label of the modem or router.  Possibly someone has change the password or even the name of the Wi-Fi and the access point is different.  You will have to reset the modem to restore the original SSID and password.  If you do this you will disconnect any other users or devices already connected.

3  Your Wi-Fi icon is missing and you cannot connect to the modem

Look for a Wi-Fi icon on the keyboard.  Your Wi-Fi may be turned off.

You can also read this for help with missing Wi-Fi icon on the task bar.
