Hi @EZ69,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A slow or unresponsive laptop can be caused by various factors, and it's important to diagnose and address the issue to improve its performance. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

  • Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary performance issues.
  • Check for Updates: Ensure your operating system and drivers are up to date. Updates often contain bug fixes and performance improvements.
  • Close Unnecessary Programs: Running too many applications simultaneously can slow down your laptop. Close any unused programs and browser tabs.
  • Free Up Disk Space: A nearly full hard drive can cause a laptop to slow down. Delete unnecessary files, and consider moving large files to an external drive.
  • Scan for Malware: Run a full system scan using a reputable antivirus or anti-malware program to check for any malicious software that might be affecting your laptop's performance.
  • Manage Startup Programs: Disable unnecessary startup programs that launch when your laptop boots up. You can do this through the Task Manager on Windows or the System Preferences on macOS.
  • Check for Background Processes: Use Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (macOS) to identify any resource-intensive background processes and close them if necessary.
  • Upgrade Hardware: If your laptop is still slow, consider upgrading your hardware, such as adding more RAM or switching to a solid-state drive (SSD) for faster storage.
  • Browser Optimization: If the slowness is primarily related to web browsing, try using a different browser or clearing your browser cache and cookies.
  • Check for Overheating: Overheating can cause a laptop to slow down. Ensure your laptop's vents are not blocked, and consider using a cooling pad to help dissipate heat.
  • Reset or Reinstall: If none of the above steps work, you may need to perform a system reset or reinstall your operating system. Be sure to back up your data before doing this.

If you receive a message asking whether to wait or cancel, it's possible that a specific program or process is not responding. In such cases, you can choose to wait for a while to see if it eventually responds, or you can choose to cancel the operation. If the issue persists and you continue to experience slowness, it's a good idea to investigate the specific program or process that's causing the problem, which you can do through the Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (macOS).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
