looking to upgrade the wifi module. Preferable to ax/wifi 6, but at l least adding a dual band chip would be great. everything I find online says except hp. any one who could give me a compatible part number that would be great.

Hi:
There are no AX wifi 6 adapters that come in the HMC form factor that I know of.
Your model may have a BIOS whitelist, which prevents the installation of any wifi card not listed in the service manual from working.
Your model has an AMD processor and chipset, so that rules out Intel cards from working.
The service manual indicates that it only came with one model wifi adapter, the Atheros card your PC has now.

If you want to experiment...
Here is a cheap card you can try...
Broadcom BCM943228HMB 802.11abgn 2×2 Wi-Fi Adapter, Broadcom Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter HP part # 730668-001
The card would have a maximum throughput of 300 MBPS on the 5.0 GHz wifi band.
You can find plenty of them for sale on eBay in used but tested and working condition, for as low as $9.
If the card works, then you can probably upgrade to the Broadcom AC card...
Broadcom BCM4352 802.11ac 2x2 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.0 combo HP part # 724935-001
The Broadcom AC card has a maximum throughput of 867 MBPS on the 5.0 GHz wifi band with an AC router.
You can also find this card on eBay for as low as $21.00
When looking for one of the above cards, do your search by the HP part number, not the model of the wifi card.

there are hmc ax cards. however I believe all of them are intel ax200 chips. thank you so much for your input though. I will try the broadcom chip and let you know if it works. I'm just going straight for the ac card. hopefully it works. this laptop is specifically used just for a stream box so wireless connectivity is paramount.

You're very welcome.
Please post back and let us know if the BCM AC card works for you.
Here are the latest W10 wifi and Bluetooth drivers HP has for that card:
Wifi: 7.35.351.0 Oct 25, 2016
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp78001-78500/sp78044.exe
BT: 12.0.1.921 Mar 21, 2016

W10 will update the wifi driver to a slightly newer version (.352) after you are connected to the internet.
