Hi again, my full version 8.1 arrived today, so I attempted the install; unfortunately I seem to have a problem with the DVD drive not reading. I've tried system diagnostics to no avail, the drive was visible earlier via windows explorer, but now isn't. I checked the bios to check the drive is enabled; it wasn't nor was it first in the boot list. I've turned the drive on and now have the DVD drive first in boot order, but it's still not reading. I'm wodering if I should reset the bios to default and start again, or have I missed something in trying to reinsate the drive? Cheers, Vince

Hi, Vince:

You may want to try setting the BIOS to its defaults and after you do that, try the one time boot options menu to select the dvd drive.

After you reset the BIOS, reboot the PC and with the W8.1 DVD in the drive tap the F9 key at the beginning of the HP welcome screen to get the one time boot menu.

Select the DVD drive from the list of bootable devices (or it may say multibay), and hit the enter key.

Watch the screen for further instructions.

If that doesn't work, the only other suggestion I can offer would be for you to transfer the file on the DVD to a usb flash drive.

There is probably some info in cyberspace on how to transfer Windows from a DVD to a flash drive.

Then tap the F9 key and select the usb flash drive from the list of bootable devices.

I'll give the BIOS reset a try; just remebered I ran an AVG tune up session that may have screwed the registry!

Hi Paul,
I reset the bios and am now installing W8.1.
I'll come back to you if I have any driver issues.
Thanks

That is great news.

Good luck.

Hi again,

I've run the new operating system for nearly 2 weeks, had one corruption that needed a reinstall, but that was my fault, otherwise broadly ok; however I seem to have one repeating, but not everytime, error in the connection to my wireless router. The symptom is that on a restart after shutdown, the network adaptor refuses to auto connect; running the diagnostic trouble shooter, reports two errors:

i) that there is no ethernet cable connection - this is correct but it's not an error

ii) the diagnostic resets the wireless network adaptor and all is well, but I guess there is driver issue that is causing the failure to connect to the router without resorting to the diagnostic fix. I have tried seeking a newer driver but the report is that it is up to date.

Hardware: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network

Connection Driver: C:\Windows\sytem32\drivers\netwlv64.sys

Your comment and any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, Vince:

The only suggestion I can offer would be to try the latest driver from Intel for that wireless card.

You want the second file on the list.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24656

Note:  The driver installation is pretty odd...an icon shows up with some dots spinning around and when the installation is finished the icon disappears and there is no notification of anything.

This is the latest driver but the actual driver that will install for that old wireless card will probably be somewhat older than Version: 17.14.0 (Latest) Date: 01/26/2015.

In any event whatever version installs will have been the final driver release for that card.

Hopefully it is newer than what you have now, and will take care of that issue.

Hello again,

I've tried the driver update, but it doesn't load; having searched on Intel's forum, I found that the network card is considered "legacy" and is not supported on Windows 8/8.1. However, my problem has been examined on their forum by others and a simple fix found: Changing power settings in control panel to "High Performance" and disabling the network card energy save option on sleep, seems to leave the card ready to auto start on next boot; has worked so far, so fingers crossed.

Thanks again for your input.
