Pavilion 15-p051us
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Okay, another Windows 10 black screen with cursor but no login. I've tried hard resets, BIOS restores, hooking up another monitor, and so on. I've tried to login, on the assumption the login window was off the screen, no joy.

The thing that I think sets my situation apart is that if I hit the Windows key and the up arrow twice, I get a window maximized named winpeshl.exe, and it doesn't seem to actually be doing anything. I've tried closing it and doing the above things, again, no luck. Any advice?

I think this machine had 8.1 on it before. It's not my laptop, belongs to the boss's grandson. I've tried to roll back to Windows 8.1, but hitting F11 during boot only shows me Windows 10 as a recovery option. I don't know if the recovery partition got overwritten or something. Is there a way to download that utility?

When I boot to the USB stick and go into Repair your Computer as instructed on the MicroSoft page, there is no option for Startup Settings, so I can't boot into Safe Mode.

Under Advanced Options I have System Restore, System Image Recovery, Start-up Repair, Command Prompt, UEFI Firmware Settings, and Go Back to the Previous Build. I've tried those with a Windows 10 DVD I burned, with no success.

Correct. As soon as I hit the power button I start rapidly hitting F5, and it never gives me an option to choose safe mode.

  1. Insert the installation media you created, and then restart your PC.
  2. On the Install Windows screen, select Repair your computer. (If you’re not seeing this screen, your PC might not be set up to boot from a drive. Check your PC manufacturer's website for info on how to boot from media, and then try again.)

  3. On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot. From there, you can use Safe Mode. Select Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.

  4. After your PC restarts, select 5 or F5 to restart you PC in Safe Mode with Networking. If your PC won’t start in Safe Mode with Networking, try steps 2-4 again, and then, after your PC restarts, select 3 or F3 to Enable low-resolution video.

run Start-up Repair

As I said before, under Troubleshoot > Advanced Options, there is no option for Startup Settings.

When I tried this with the DVD I burned, it sat at a blank, blue screen for a while and then said it was unable to do anything.

Booting from the USB stick and choosing the option, it sat at a blue screen for a while. I went out to get lunch and I came back and it currently says Diagnosing your PC. I'll let you know what happens next. Thanks!
