The Recovery Manager will have a copy of the original sound driver that came on the computer. Try installing it from the Recovery Manager.

1. Click Start

2. Type 'recovery'

3. Click HP Recovery Manager

4. In the Recovery Manager, Click Reinstall Software and Drivers

5. Look for the Conexant driver and select it

6. Click Install and allow it to install.

Let me know if you find it there and what the results are 🙂

Dear Axshun Jaxun,

Thanks once again for your help.

I have followed all the procedure, but still when the install the Conexant driver, at the it gives the message that it failled to ininstall, because it can not find the device for the driver.

Thanks once again.

Emmanuel.

I see. Sometimes Windows gives that false error simply because it can't see the hardware due to the software not being in place. At this point, though, it could be that there is a legitimate hardware problem. Reinstalling Windows would correct any software problems if it is just software. That would be my next step. I would recommend backing up your personal files onto an external hard drive and then the steps for recovery can be found here  If after the recovery, it is still giving you that error message, it is definitely going to be a hardware issue and it will need to be repaired.

Let me know if you have any questions Smiley Happy

Ok, please post the results of the recovery when you get a chance, in case anyone else may be running into the same issue. I'm just interested to know if this really is a hardware issue. 🙂

Hi,

I will post the results, when I am done with the recovery.

I'm having EXACTLY the same issue - but with an HP Pavilion dv9820us Notebook.  I'm interested in all posts bc if I continue along the same path without a fix soon....I will go insane.

I tried all the recommended steps here: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&docname=c01695430&lc=en&product=1842186 .

Believe it or not, the issue temporarily resolved itself.

I did not celebrate bc I knew this would be short-lived.  Sure enough within an hour of resolution - the problem re-occurred.  I ended up having a glass of vodka and thought I'd see another post with suggestion this morning.

By the way...I called HP a moment ago.  Their response:  Even if I paid for support they wouldn't be able to help me bc the product - dv9820us - is obsolete.

It's too early for vodka.

Hey Aaron1957,

I'm really sorry to hear that you're running into this audio issue. I can confirm that response from HP phone support. The thing is, they wouldn't  even be able to create an order to charge you for any type of support because it is older than 5 years. This is an industry standard for the most part and not specific to HP alone.

I will do my best to help you out with the issue as much as I can. Here on the forums, we (the entire community) provide the same quality of service, if not better because two heads are better than one. Plus it is free so you can't really beat that. Smiley Happy

It sounds like you've already tried quite a bit and you may already be at the same point that corridors is at. Once all other software possibilities have been checked/tried, it's time for a reinstall. Reinstalling Windows will confirm whether or not it is a hardware issue. If it does happen to be maybe a registry software issue, the reinstall will correct that by reinstalling the registry. If it is truly a hardware issue, then you'll know without any doubt that either 1.) the speakers have come unplugged/there's a short in the speaker cable or 2.) the motherboard's sound chip has gone bad and the motherboard will need to be replaced.

If you're a hobbyist, checking the speaker cable can be a task in itself. If you don't have any experience with working inside a computer, a task like this could be taken care of by a local repair shop.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Re: HP Pavilion dv9820us - Same problem as Audio output Device Problem for HP Pavilion dv6500 using Vista Home Premium.

Thanks for your quick response.

I now have audio - I'm not celebrating yet...but here are the steps I took ....in the EXACT order:

  1. Downloaded this driver:  Conexant AC'97 Audio Driver for Vista/Windows 7 x64  (NOTE:  Direct Link = http://www.64bitdrivers.com/files/sp35558.exe )
  2. Because there was "no audio device installed", the driver did not install.
  3. In Device Manager, I had absolutely nothing listed - including the Folder itself - as Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  But under the Folder = Other Devices, I had an "Unknown Device" with a ? highlited.
  4. I then right-clicked on the Unknown Device and then Uninstalled it.
  5. I restarted my laptop.

I now have audio.

For how long...I do not know.  I will post to this Forum with any significant info should it occur.

Thanks again.

Great! I don't want to jinx you. I'm hopeful for you though. Looking forward to an update when you get a chance.
