BIOS Recovery Failed

Recently I wanted to delete everything from my notebook. So I decided to do a factory reset, however when doing this something went wrong and it seems as though either the BIOS has been deleted or the Operating System. Honeslty I'm not quiet sure. 

Anyway, when turning the notebook on the HP symbol shows on the sreen followed by a black screen, this just repeats then. 

I have downloaded the "HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors)" file found on software and driver downloads using a different computer from the HP Support website.

I then followed the instructions to copy this file onto a memory stick. I then followed the instructions given on this page under the heading "Recovering the notebook BIOS using an external storage device".  http://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c02693833

However, when I done this I was presented with a screen saying, "The System BIOS recovery failed. Unable to open BIOS Signature file."

Is there any hope of fixing this, preferably that I could do myself?

Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum.

I can assure you it was not the BIOS that got deleted - it was the operating system (OS) which got erased.

The situation appears probably because it cannot fully load Windows or Windows was not installed fully and completely. Don't mess up with the BIOS because you may brick the device.

Your model originally comes with Windows 8.1

You write that you use Windows 10. I suspect your PC was upgraded to Windows 10.

If this is the case, the upgrade has probably corrupted the recovery partition which causes the issue you experience now.

* I suspect your PC was upgraded to Win 10 and I will post instructions below how to fix it with Windows 10 in mind. If you want to run Windows 8.1, please let me know.

This will be a long reading but still...... since you previously performed upgrade from Win 8.1 to Win 10 on this very same computer and if you used Win 10 for a while and if Windows 10 was activated (it's licence was activated), then your computer has a Digital entitlement option stored on Microsoft servers. Because of this, you no longer need a code/lic key to activate Windows if you need to reinstall it.  More info about Digital entitlement:

You can directly download Windows 10 ISO from MS site or download Media creation tool from Microsoft site, create installation DVD or installation USB  and  proceed with clean installation/reinstallation.

When ready with the Win 10 USB drive:

* Ensure Secure Boot is disabled.

* Ensure Legacy mode is enabled.

* Save the UEFI/BIOS changes.

Eventually, please, shutdown the computer using the power button.

Insert the Windows 10 USB thumdrive

Power  on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one

Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the USB thumb drive as boot option.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 10

Delete all partitions and install W10 on a unpartitioned space

Eventyally, after installing Win 10, download drivers from HP web site when Win installation completes or via Windows Update/Device Manager >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139

Thank you for your help.

I have downloaded Windows 10 on a USB and have followed your instructions. However once I press F9 it gives me two opinions first is, " OS boot Manager (UEFI) - Windows Boot Manager (BGND3R)"
The second one is "Boot From EFI File" I am assuming I'm supposed to click the second option.

When selecting this I am then presented with a further two options so I clicked the one that has the name of my USB.

However, when going into this it just says "Recycle.BIN" and then "System Volume Information".

I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

What you see happens because Secure Boot is not disabled and/or because Legacy mode is not active.

Ensure your PC has Secure Boot disabled, Legacy Mode enabled.

Follow the steps above strictly and when ready, pressing F9 should bring the USB flash drive.
