28 hours and still 100% sphinx worked for me i just had to run through the steps 2 times, maybe it will take some people 3. if it dosent work the first time id definately try again, it only takes a few minutes. i love this machine but im definately going to think twice about buying another hp product in the future. the way hp has handled this situation is very crappy considering how much we all paid for these machines. some of the posts from hp in other threads are just hilariously bad, talking about how batteries degrade as they age when these machines are brand new!!!

I did read the entire thread and have been following it closelyfor >2 weeks. I don't know much about computers and was not confident to install a fix that was not an official HP release. That is why I refered HP to this forum where some are saying that they have had a successful fix. Although a forum user stated that the fix was given to them by a HP technitian, it was not an official HP release. I also noted it hadn't worked for everyone. Mine is an i5, 8bg, 256HDD machine so was not sure it would work or wreck my PC. I noted that other people had the same feeling. I posted to inform other users that HP advised that it will be releasing the fix officially. I also got another call yesterday from HP to check on the computer and the technitian advised that the fix will be released as part of a new bios update.

I also have the  i7-7500u with 512gb and 16gb ram (13-w023dx)  and the Sphinx update worked for me as well. It didn't work the first time and thought it wouldn't work for me. Then I saw this reply so I did it a second time and eureka! After 18 hours I was still at 100%. Thank you, thank you, thank you

Back and forth with a tech and a case manager.  they are unaware of this issue.  tech just wanted to change some power management settings and the case manager dismissing this entire thread.  I've heard it all from other laptops have this issue and how they don't make the components. I just want them to investigate harder and provide me with an update.

Something new has happened. My computer was at 9 %. I plugged it in and it wont charge. Turned it of and now it wont charge or turn. Omg....

This charging problem happened to me after I did the Sphinx update and a windows update happened during the restart.

After some web searching, I found this thread and followed the instructions in Post 17 which said to update the BIOS using the HP Assistant App. That actually did restore my ability to charge the battery but if you're at 9%, I'm not sure what you can do... I was at 58% when it happened to me which, thankfully, was enough to get me through the BIOS update

[Update: more details in msg 178 but applying the Sphinx Update 2x in a row restored my ability to charge the battery. Unfortunately, not a solution if you only have 9% or can't turn it on but maybe helpful for someone else...]

The whole experience along with the battery draining problem has not given me a warm fuzzy feeling about my new Spectre (13-w023dx), especially given that the Sphinx update did not solve my battery drain problem. I did see that some users had to apply the Sphinx update 2x so I'm going to try that next

What does the sphinx update do? Is it safe to run on all models? Who the f knows. HP sucks.

Look at Post 86 on page 9

I have no idea if it works for all models but I have the same model that the original poster of the update and the one who reposted it on google drive so at least there is hope for mine...

Well, this has been a fascinating exercise... when I ran the sphinx update again on my 13-w023dx, when I did the last step:

10. Run “PDFwflash_X32_v01” on “PD FW ver Check folder” to check the FW version (0x14 is correct version)

I only got one line, the 0x7e line. I don't get the 0x70 line. This happened when I applied it the first time too. I thought it was ok since the line that printed was 0x14 and that the charging problem happened because it applied some updates on the reboot.  Now I think that the sphinx update actually resulted in the battery charging problem because it came back

When I flashed the BIOS last time, then I got both 0x14 lines and the spectre charges but the battery drain problem is back. So, with nothing else to lose, I decided to run the sphinx update for a 3rd time (2nd in a row; between the 1st and 2nd time, I did a BIOS update) and amazingly, I  now get both 0x14 lines and it's charging again. I'll charge it back up to 100% and then leave it for a day or 2 and report back if the battery drain issue is finally gone for me AND I'm also able to charge the battery...

It's like we're buying experimental drug in the black market. The sad thing is I really like the laptop if it wasn't for this experience.
