I have the 520 Touchsmart and had the startup file missing too. I first tried doing the solution using the sp52658.exe but that was for a Pavillion computer and not Touchsmart 520s. Since I'd already uninstalled the original files, and those extracted by sp52658.exe did not work, I was reconciled to having lost it all.
But then I happened across another user with the TouchSmart 520 who had the same problem and the solution was slightly different. This time the solution involved downloading and saving sp56045.exe
It also did not require you going to Control Panel > Programs & Devices and uninstalling IDT . Instead, it started with Control Panel > Device Manager > Sound etc and uninstall the IDT Codec .....then restart the computer. Oh yeah.....you should download the sp56045.exe and save it to your download folder before you restart your computer
Once your computer restarts, find the sp56045.exe file on your computer. RIGHT click it, and choose "Run As Administrator" .....let it run and complete. Then RIGHT click the speaker icon on the Taskbar > select "Playback Devices" > select the option (LEFT click) "Speakers & Headphones" once to hilite it and click "set as default."
At this point, I looked into the hidden icons of the Taskbar, and found the Beats Audio icon up there with the others again, and I knew all was well. The solution did not say to restart again.
Since I had to restart the computer the window with that original solution information disappeared, and I've tried to find it again on the site here. But, I did not notice which forum discussion it was, just that it was a highly experienced HP Windows expert who has over 100 pages of posts and I could not find it again to leave a KUDO for him.
I would recommend that you try to find the original solution before making any changes based on the above information. However, I wanted to list the sp56045.exe file number so you might recognize it when you find it. It is out there, and it does work, for this Touchsmart 520 system running Windows 7 64bit.

Hi guys,
I have a laptop.. and HP Pavilion DV6 with Windows 7 Home Premium.
Its a UK model, though that might not make a difference..
Anyway, followed the thread and tried the download, then tried to install but apparently my machine doesnt meet the requirements for the update.
Beatz Audio with same problem, that on firing it up, "cannot find .startup file!"
Can someone please lead me to a link to an update that can be downloaded and executed successfully on my machine?
It would be very much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi,
Try the following.
Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery. Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds. Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu. Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.
Now use Recovery Manager to reinstall the IDT HD Audio Driver - the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the document on the link below.

After the reinstallation has completed, restart the notebook again.

[Content Removed]... REALLY ??? all of THAT to fix this issue? Sad ... there really should be a more user-freindly (read: Less Technical) solution to whatever Broke this ... ugh.

This is only good for Notebooks. It does not work for Desktops. I tried and it completely left me unable to reinstall any drivers or software. Now I'm stuck with the origonal problem. Any link for a desktop?
