Hello david,

I have the same problem with my hp model dv9000 computer.  Is there anywhere I can dowload a 32 bit vista version in order to get vista back and working again.   I am just getting the blinking underscore screen upon startup.  Also if so does the same command prompt work as well?

Hello AyanaJones.

Have you tested your hard drive and memory?  If not, it sounds like that'd be a good thing to do.  Here are instructions for running the diagnostics.

Also, which notebook do you own?  If you could identify it by the product number that would be very helpful.  This document can show you where it is located.

Have a good day!

Hey, I am currently having the same problem. I was successful until the second command that I have to input. After typing bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup it says "The store export operation has failed. The requested syster device cannot be found."

What do I do?

I know this is an old thread but I have been working on this problem for 2 days and I am hoping that my posting this will help the next persson who runs into this issue

I have an HP Elitebook 840 G1 with fresh Windows 7 Pro build that got stuck on the black screen with white cursor at boot. Laptop was running fine at first but during updating it rebooted to this screen. I accidentally determined that this only happens when the AC adapter was plugged in when I uplugged the adapter to move the laptop and it suddenly finished booting.  Once into Windows, plugging the adapter in caused the CPU to run at 100% and the laptop became unusable. I thought it was the adapter but with another adapter it did the same thing and it also went back up to 100% after a few minutes even when unplugged.

So I started fresh and monitored when the problem manifested and guess what? As soon as a Windows update for Intel Ethernet Connection I218-LM was installed the laptop started doing this. I unplugged the adapter so the laptop was usable again, and downloaded and ran the Intel driver utility and it installed the driver. Laptop started acting normally again. I noticed the Intel update came back into the list after doing this so I just hid it. So mine was not a hardware issue at all!
