HP pavillion DV-6178us
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Still crashing after removing the update. No new software, just started happening. This update was supposedly 4 years ago, so I didn't think that was the problem. I upgraded to 8G RAM 2 years ago, replaced the CPU cooling fan abou the same time, have another cooling fan setup under the laptop, so i don't think it is an overheating problem. Although the fan does still get loud. Thought about adding heatsink thermal compound to the CPU and upgrading to 16G ram, which i guess it can handle. Anyways, not sure what to do next.

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Pavilion dv7-6178us Entertainment laptop. The laptop crashes after an error message saying "igdpmd64.sys. PAGE_FAULT_IN." You have successfully removed the KB2670838 Windows update from your laptop. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Does this happen while you're using a particular application or happens randomly?
  • Does the laptop boot into Windows and then crash?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Please download and install a Microsoft Hotfix which is known to fix this error.
  • If the issue persists then please try the run Microsoft troubleshooter. This will automatically repair issues including corrupted registry keys.

Hope the above steps fix the issue. Please feel free to let me know the outcome. Cheers! 🙂

  • Does the laptop boot into Windows and then crash? Somtimes after the initial crash, it takes a few reboots and restores to get it to function. Then randomly maybe a few hours or even a week it'll crash again.

Thanks
