My laptop was hot when i got home....screen closed but fan running.  I unplugged it, removed the battery, and let it completely cool down.  Worked fine about an hour later.  Well see if it starts asgain.

Would like a response from HP on this if possible.. seems to be a fairly prevalent issue.

Hi Rrozel,

I understand you are having an issue with the browser opening new windows over and over again. This would be a virus. You might want to check with your internet provider or your virus protection on this issue.

Thanks

This is total incompetence.    Read this thread.

There is a hardware defect in some HP Laptop computers that, as a non-HP employee, I am easily able to find such that I found this.

1. I have re-installed ALL factory discs from scratch

2. I have reformatted everything and re-installed from OS disc, Windows 7, 8, 8.1, Ubuntu, and Mint

3. I have replaced the physical keyboard on the laptop

Behavior STILL continues.

Same as everyone else on this thread reports.

Your attempt at resolving this is pathetic.

I will NEVER EVER buy an HP product again.

PERIOD.

He has a VIRUS.  That is a joke of an response.

Agreed. As I even stated in my post, I have already determined it isn't a virus - that it is hardware related. They obviously did not even fully read it.

Has anyone found a permanent fix for this? I just got an HP Pavilion dv7-6b78 us and after working fine for a couple of days it is now useless because it constantly opens new IE windows and constantly refreshes to home when I try to use Firefox or Chrome.  I have tried other suggestions in this thread and nothing has worked.  I have also tried resetting the hosts file to default (a suggestion in a different forum) and that didn't work either.

Only permanent fix I've had is not using the laptop.  I have 2 of them, one works one has the problem.  Never buying an HP product again.   They have told us to do some pretty silly things to fix the problem when it is actually a hardware defect.

I've tried EVERYTHING in this post, nothing has resolved it.

I just gave up since HP did.

I hope y'all don't quit on your customers.

I bought a Pavilion laptop in South Africa and it has the same issues. Before anyone says it is a virus or malware, or IE inconsistency (like issues with graphics rendering or whatnot):

My HP keeps opening new windows of any browser. And I do mean any browser. Even the browser of Kaspersky's resque disk, booted up in Linux.

I threw every good antivirus and malware remover at it, even some borderline arcane ones. One or two of them complained about each other! But believe me there is no malware near my computer. And it still happens.

No, I don't visit questionable web pages.

I destroyed, reformatted and recreated partitions and started from scratch installing windows 7.

No, I didn't recover anything from my PC, I downloaded the software straight from the originators' websites. Quite a pain to find drivers for all the insides of the HP laptop. My laptop is up to date, no software errors, no driver errors whatsoever, and still those pesky browser windows keep appearing.

They don't point to some bad website, they just reopen the default browser home window. The least active way for those browser windows to appear is to make one browser the default browser (like Chrome or Firefox) and then actively browsing on IE or Safari something else. At least this way one can browse (to find support forums, for example).

Let's get some professional help here. I am not ready to throw away a perfectly powerful laptop just yet. What is going on? Is it a power unit error? Hardware damage?

I have the same problem. Is there any solution yet? 😕
