Thank you all for the time in reading the post and all of the suggestions. This is the first night since last year that I was actually able to use my computer with the cord in since last year. The site to download keytweak that you gave was perfect. No viruses-- just the easy to use program.
Mahalo!

HP, not sure if you monitor these are not, but there appears to be a hardware issue with the WEB BROWSER button on the keyboards of some users laptops.
I've personally replaced a keyboard, WIPED my HDD completely (including recovery partitions), installed Windows 7, Ubuntu, Mint, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 all with the same problem.
The frustrating thing is that with all of these posts, NOBODY from HP even mentiond there is a WEB BROWSER button (why on earth would anyone need such a button is beyond me) and instead repeatedly asked users to do things that had either been tried or were irrelevant for the problem at hand.
Please ADD TO YOUR KB!
Thanks,
Detatching myself from this thread.

FINALLY!
I registered just to say thank you, all of you. After two formats and countless malware scans, I assumed I had a faulty keyboard. Found the little www key near the power button and was searching how to disable it when I found this thread.
FWIW... laptop is a dv6 6140us. I love the laptop. Never a problem until now. Surprised at the response from HP here in this thread. WOW.
Guys, take care. Thanks again. Hopefully this will be added and found more readily by (I'm sure) others that are looking for it.

Aha! That makes a lot of sense, actually. Thank you!
It seems that we users have discovered how to diagnose and fix an HP hardware defect that HP failed to even diagnose properly (and if one more person tells me the problem is from a virus....)
I have an HP Pavilion dv6-6c 14nr, and I've been having the same problem. I had figured out the primary cause, but not specifically how it was happening. The fan on my laptop is bad (a recent problem), and I stream videos quite frequently, so my laptop has been overheating. I discovered that the browser was launching when my computer was overheated - the hotter it was, the faster it would launch browser windows or redirect an existing window to the home page. Another post mentioned their computer was running hot as well - do you remember if yours was? Btw, you can download a tool called Speccy that will show you the temp of your cpu and motherboard. So, my solution - I took two trays of ice cubes, but them in a giant ziploc bag, and put them under my computer to cool it down. The browser problem stopped! (until the ice melted, that is). This wasn't a permanent solution, of course, but simply a diagnostic measure. I couldn't figure out how overheating was causing the browser to launch, though - it didn't make any sense to me at all. However, it must be related to the effect of the overheating on the shortcut key you mention (also mentioned in another post - F5, I believe) . That key is near the part of my laptop that gets the hottest - perhaps the heat somehow makes the computer think the key is being pressed? And your solution - disabling the shortcut - is fantastic, thank you! (I was getting tired of putting fresh ice under my laptop - though I will have to get a new fan pretty soon before my laptop is damaged beyond repair).
Thanks again!
