Well that took care of that, but still no WLAN. I guess maybe the WLAN card is just dead?

I would say so.

My suggestion would be to remove the WLAN card.

Run the notebook without it.

Then shut down the notebook and put the WLAN card back in, making sure you seat it carefully but firmly.

If after you do that, there is no network controller or the ralink driver didn't install,  then you can pretty much be assured either the card or the motherboard is shot.

Ok, now I think I've just dug myself deeper.

I took your suggestion, but now on startup of Windows, the laptop suddenly makes a buzzing sound from the speakers and freezes up completely. It now does this every time I start the computer and log in to Windows. What's the deal now?

Unfortunately, I would have no idea.

Yeah, I'd say I'm pretty much stuck as well.

This really has been the most frustrating issue I think I've had with a computer. I'm thinking I am going to see if there's any way I can return it.

Thank you so much for bearing with me and for helping me as muc as you did!

Well, I haven't quite given up hope yet. I fixed whatever issue that was with the buzzing by doing another fresh install. I think I might have just had some conflicting drivers or something.

I'm going to buy another WLAN card and see if that does the trick. Fingers crossed. I will reply again if I have any luck with this method.

Glad you got that part fixed.

Make sure you only buy a wireless card listed in chapter 3 of the service manual for your notebook, and it MUST be one with the HP part number or it probably will not work.

Good luck!

No worries there. The part numbers match, so unless it's DOA, I should be fine. Thanks for the reminder.

Just another driver issue to address:

I'm trying to make sure I have all the necessary drivers/programs for my computer. I downloaded most everything but for some reason the little LED that usually flashes next to the fingerprint reader is no longer lighting up and when I installed SimplePass, it wouldn't register that the device was scanning at all.

Thanks for holding my hand through all this, lol. This has been quite a task - and pretty strange since everything was working fine for about a month and then it all went kaput.

Hi:

I don't have any experience with working the security on notebooks since I never use it.

However, here is a link to an excellent guide to get fingerprint sensors to work.

Thanks for directing me to that guide. Managed to get it working.
