The i7 640M processor does work. I have it running in my HP G62 a23SA.

There are differences in the microcodes, and unless the BIOS has the microcode for the 640M (or there is a BIOS update which adds support), it will error out.

There is a Geekbench submission for a G62 running a i7-640M: http://browser.geekbench.com/geekbench3/1160501

I will most likely be ordering this CPU to upgrade my G62 so in due time I will try to post back to confirm this.

HP documentation should be regarded as a prodcut offering and not as a definitive compatibility list but ofc it is always safer to go with whatever is in the documentation.
